DELAWARE, Ohio – The 11th/10th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan University women's basketball team hosted DePauw on Wednesday evening for an NCAC clash. The Battling Bishops seized control early and never let up, opening with a 19-8 lead on the way to a 55-50 victory, their 14th straight.
With the win, OWU improves to 15-1 overall, and remains perfect in NCAC competition at 6-0. The Bishops have not suffered a loss since November 14th. DePauw falls to 10-7, and 3-3 in conference play.
Ohio Wesleyan started strong, as
Carly Lehman buried a three to give the Red and Black a 12-4 lead just five minutes into the game. OWU built on the early advantage, closing out the first 10 minutes of play ahead 19-10. In the second quarter,
Maddie Ebbert sank a free throw with 6:56 remaining to extend the lead to 12, the largest of the night. However, DePauw began to find their stride, as the Tigers outscored the Bishops 12-9 over the remainder of the quarter. Ohio Wesleyan led DePauw 31-22 at the break.
The back-and-forth battle continued after the break, with both sides putting up 14 points in the third. With just 4:46 remaining in the contest, the Bishops led 51-40, but DePauw continued to fight. The Tigers sparked a 9-2 run to cut the Bishop lead to just five with just under two minutes to play. However, the Red and Black withstood the late surge to secure a 55-50 victory and keep their winning streak alive.
THE NUMBERS
The Bishops shot 33.33% from the field, going 20-for-60. OWU went 4-of-10 from behind the arc, and 11-for-16 at the charity stripe.
Macy Miller continued her stellar campaign with 18 points and 15 boards, marking her eighth consecutive double-double and 14th overall. She also had two blocks, one assist, and one steal.
Alyssa Griner was the only other Bishop in double digits with 10 points. Griner also recorded six rebounds.
Maddie Ebbert finished with six points, eight rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
Katie Neuhart had four points and four rebounds.
Kendall Dieringer added three points, three assists, three rebounds, and one steal.
Nora Johns tallied three points, fours assists, one rebound and one steal.
Bella Brader,
Mia Guscoff, and
Carly Lehman all finished with three points off the bench, courtesy of a lone triple. Lehman added two rebounds and two steals with one assist while Guscoff added an assist.
Claire Wakim contributed two points.
