Powers Puts Away Four as Bishops Beat Presidents 6-0

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Ohio Wesleyan University field hockey team (10-4, 4-2 NCAC) got back on track with a 6-0 win at Washington & Jefferson (1-8, 1-6 NCAC) on Wednesday evening. Junior forward Mary Powers scored a career-high four goals, tying the second most in a single game in program history and becoming the first Bishop since 2009 to do so.

The Battling Bishops wasted no time in pulling ahead, scoring twice in the first 10 minutes and taking a 2-0 lead into the first break. Powers was responsible for both goals. The first came in just the third minute with an assist by Abbey Gordon, followed by the second in the ninth minute with an assist by Annabel Fauver.

OWU was held to just one goal in the second quarter, but not for a lack of trying. The Bishops took 11 shots in the quarter – their third most in a single period this season. Powers finally put one past the keeper in the 23rd minute off another assist by Fauver to give the Red and Black a 3-0 advantage at the half.

Ohio Wesleyan netted two more in the third quarter to increase their lead to 5-0 after 45 minutes. Powers scored the first – her fourth of the game – in the 35th minute, assisted by Susie Benincasa. Fauver recorded the second in the 38th, assisted by Morgan Leeper.

Reagan Shifflett finished the game off in the 57th with OWU's sixth and final goal and only of the fourth quarter, taking the final score to 6-0 with an assist from Ava Zimmer. Defensively, the Bishops held W&J shotless until the final 15 minutes. Payton Mindel completed the clean sheet with a save against the Presidents' lone shot in the 55th minute.

THE NUMBERS
Ohio Wesleyan outshot Washington & Jefferson 29-1 overall and 20-1 in shots on goal. OWU held a 14-0 edge in penalty corners. The Presidents made 14 saves compared to the Bishops' one.
