Batting Bishops Breeze Past Adrian in Home-Opener for First Win

DELAWARE, Ohio – The Ohio Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team started their home schedule on a high note on Tuesday night as they hosted Adrian. The Battling Bishops would put up 21 goals to earn their first win of the season 21-8. It was OWU win number 175 for head coach Mike Plantholt.

The Red and Black improve to 1-1 while Adrian drops to 0-4.

The Bishops took no time in getting started, scoring two goals within the first 70 seconds to take a 2-0 lead. Will Siegenthaler had a hand in both goals, assisting the first to Garrett Smith and scoring the second himself. Ohio Wesleyan added two more a few minutes later for an early 4-1 lead. This time it was Wade Beckstrom and Henry Ross getting in on the action. Noah Citek tacked on another with a FOGO goal before end of the quarter, leading to a 5-4 score at the first break.

The Red and Black started to separate themselves in the second quarter as they scored seven goals – three-straight to begin the period and four-straight to end it – while holding Adrian to just one. Smith and Ross each added a pair to complete their hat tricks, with Siegenthaler and Beckstrom both tacking on one as well. Carson Fialho was the last to find the back of the net for the Bishops in the half, scoring his first of the season to make it a 12-5 game at the half.

The Battling Bishops started the second half the same way they ended the first, with a four-goal run to take a double-digit lead at 16-5. Fialho completed his hat trick with two of the four as Beckstrom added the other two. Cole Tulgestke tacked on his first of the season a few minutes later to make it a 17-6 game entering the final 15 minutes.

OWU went on to outscore Adrian 4-1 in the final period, ending the game on a three-goal run for a 21-8 final result. Nick Sauline, Colton Garner, Ryan Zabatta all scored their career-firsts, joined in the back of the net by Luke Georgelakos with his first of the season.

THE NUMBERS
Ohio Wesleyan spent the majority of the night on the offensive end, taking a total of 57 shots and putting 35 on goal. All-in-all, the Bishops outshot the Bulldogs 57-27 overall and 35-17 in shots on target.

The Red and Black were 26-for-33 on clears, 14-for-16 on faceoffs, and picked up 49 ground balls.

Wade Beckstrom paced the Battling Bishops with five points on four goals and one assist, also causing one turnover.

Henry Ross and Cason Fialho both had three goals and one assist for four points. Ross also tied his career high with seven ground balls and caused one turnover.

Will Siegenthaler and Garrett Smith both finished with three points. Smith did it with three goals while Siegenthaler did it with two goals and one assist. Smith also grabbed one ground ball.

Cole Tulgestke, Nick Sauline, Noah Citek, Ryan Zabatta, Colton Garner, and Luke Georgelakos finished off the scoresheet with one goal apiece. Sauline, Zabatta, and Garner each nabbed the first goals of their careers.

Blake Altman and Matt Keeler had one assist each. Keeler also recorded a ground ball.

Citek was 17-for-24 on the faceoff to go along with his goal. He grabbed 11 ground balls.

Henry Pinamonti led things on the defensive end with two caused turnovers and one ground ball. Also making an impact were Tanner Hower (1 CT, 5 GB), Luca DiCarlo (1 CT, 3 GB), Cooper Heald (1 CT, 2 GB), and Christian Caballero (1 CT, 1 GB).

Jack Hartman (1-1) got the start in the cage and played the first 15 minutes, making one save and going down with the win. Kal Lonergan played the middle 30 minutes, making four saves. Jason Mosher came in for the final 15 minutes, making four saves as well.

The Battling Bishops take a trip to Pennsylvania on Thursday for a neutral-site game with Franklin & Marshall. The two sides are set to face off at 4 p.m.
