BEREA, Ohio – The Ohio Wesleyan University baseball team hit the road Wednesday to take on 25th-ranked Baldwin Wallace, aiming to build on a strong weekend. The Battling Bishops stumbled out of the gate and couldn't regain their footing until the game was well out of reach, ultimately suffering an 18-8 defeat.
OWU falls to 8-9 on the year, while Baldwin Wallace advances to 14-3.
The Yellow Jackets potent offense was on full display in the first inning, scoring eight runs on five hits and five walks. The early scoring surge put the Bishops in an immediate hole that proved entirely insurmountable. In the third inning, the Red and Black got on the board after
Marcus Suwinski drove in
Austin Biggin via an RBI-single. However, Baldwin Wallace fired back in the bottom half, tacking on three more after a pair of doubles and singles.
In the fifth, the Yellow Jackets capitalized on an error and a wild pitch to bring two more runners across, extending their lead to 13-1. OWU finally found some rhythm in the sixth when
Henry Isaacs ripped a two-run single to left, bringing
Alex Snyder and Biggin home to chip away at the deficit. However, much like the third inning, Baldwin Wallace roared right back with four runs in the bottom half, utilizing two singles, a sacrifice fly, and a hit batter to make it 17-3.
The seventh inning featured the best offensive output from the Bishops all night. After the Yellow Jackets walked the bases loaded, Suwinski reached on a fielder's choice to score
Blake Pettit.
Nate Colyer followed with an RBI-single, scoring
Colton Moone to tack on another run.
Holden Tomlin was next, who recorded his first career RBI after roping a single up the middle to bring Suwinski home.
Drew Newman joined the career-firsts party, ripping his first collegiate double to left field to drive Tomlin home. The Bishops cut into the deficit, but still trailed 17-7 after their seventh inning outburst.
Baldwin Wallace's Jack Sivec closed out the night's offense with a home run in the bottom of the seventh. The blast sealed an 18-7 defeat for Ohio Wesleyan against the 25th-ranked Yellow Jackets.
