DELAWARE, Ohio – The Ohio Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team hosted Roanoke on Saturday afternoon at Selby Stadium. A slow start spelled trouble for the Battling Bishops, ultimately ending in an 11-6 defeat.
The Red and Black sink to 1-3 on the season. Roanoke rises to 4-1.
The Bishops' offense was unable to find their footing in the first two quarters, being held scoreless on five shots in the first and netting just two in the second. Inversely, Roanoke cracked the board for three in the first quarter and four in the second for a 7-2 halftime lead.
Carson Fialho found the goal for OWU's first of the afternoon in the second quarter with an assist by
Blake Altman.
Wade Beckstrom followed a few minutes later, assisted by
Matt Keeler.
Ohio Wesleyan matched the Maroons score-for-score in the final two periods, 1-1 in the third and 3-3 in the fourth. Unfortunately, this meant the Bishops did not make a dent into the five-goal deficit, leaving an 11-6 final score.
Blake Altman was the lone goalscorer for OWU in the third, with an assist from
Henry Ross. Ross tallied two of his own in the fourth quarter with assists from Beckstrom and Altman, finishing off a quick three-goal streak to get the Bishops within three.
Garrett Smith scored the first one of the run. Three was as close as OWU would get before Roanoke concluded the game with two unanswered.
THE NUMBERS
OWU was at a slight disadvantage in overall shots (37-32) as well as shots on goal (21-17). Additionally, the Bishops picked up 30 ground balls, caused 11 turnovers, and went 16-for-20 on clears.
Henry Ross and
Blake Altman led the offense with three points each. Ross' three points consisted of two goals and one assist along with four ground balls. Altman managed his three points on one goal and two assists along with one ground ball.
Wade Beckstrom turned in two points on one goal and one assist, adding one caused turnover.
Garrett Smith and
Carson Fialho finished with one goal apiece. Fialho also caused two turnovers and grabbed one ground ball.
Noah Citek went 14-for-19 on faceoffs and collected nine ground balls.
Luca DiCarlo (2 CT, 3 GB) led things on the defensive end, joined by
Matt Keeler (1 CT, 1 GB, 1 A), and
Cole Tulgestke (1 CT, 3 GB).
Jason Mosher (0-2) manned the cage for the afternoon, making a career-high 10 saves.
