DELAWARE, Ohio – The Ohio Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team met DePauw on a stormy night at Selby Stadium on Tuesday. Clear skies at 7 p.m. eventually turned into downpours of rain alongside thunder and lightning at halftime, prompting a two-hour storm delay with the game halted 8-2 in favor of OWU. When play resumed around 10:15 p.m., the Battling Bishops picked up right where they left off, outscoring the Tigers 13-2 in the second half en route to a 21-4 win.
The Red and Black come away with their third-straight victory – and third-straight game with 21 goals – to move to 6-6 on the season and 4-2 in the NCAC. DePauw drops to 5-7 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
Ohio Wesleyan nabbed an early lead with three goals in the opening period while allowing just one.
Carson Fialho bookend the quarter with the first and third goals of the game for the Bishops.
Wade Beckstrom scored the second.
Beckstrom made it 4-1 to start the second quarter before DePauw put in their second and final goal of the half with just over four minutes remaining. From there, the Battling Bishops averaged a goal per minute to end the half at 8-2. Beckstrom scored three of the final four, with
Will Siegenthaler recording the other.
The lightning, thunder, and rain started to hit near the end of halftime, around 8:03 p.m. When the storm materialized, it was relentless, leading to a delay of two hours and seven minutes. The second half finally got going around 10:15 p.m.
The Red and Black picked up right where they left off with a 5-0 shutout in the third quarter to extend their lead to 13-2.
Henry Ross scored the first, followed by
Cole Tulgestke, Siegenthaler, Fialho, Ross again, and Tulgestke again.
The fourth quarter was one of career-firsts as
Peter Sarnowski,
Wes Starr, and
Davis Brewster all opened their career scoring accounts. Tulgestke started the quarter with OWU's 10th-straight goal – a run that started in the second quarter. Sarnowski was next, having his goal sandwiched between the final two for the Tigers.
Wes Starr started a 6-0 streak to end the game, scoring back-to-back goals. He was followed by
Cooper Heald, Brewster,
Luke Georgelakos, and Brewster again to finish it off with a 21-4 final score.
THE NUMBERS
Ohio Wesleyan took 60 shots compared to 25 for DePauw, putting 34 on target. The Bishops secured 26-of-32 faceoffs, picking up 50 ground balls, and directly causing 12 turnovers while going 20-for-22 on clears.
Wade Beckstrom led the Battling Bishops with five points on five goals with one caused turnovers and four ground balls.
Carson Fialho had three goals and two ground balls.
Will Siegenthaler recorded four points on two goals and two assists.
Cole Tulgestke and
Henry Ross both finished with three points on two goals and one assist. Ross had three ground balls and Tulgestke collected one, while each had one caused turnover.
Davis Brewster tallied his first three career points, scoring two goals and dishing out one assist.
Wes Starr scored his first two career goals.
Cooper Heald and
Luke Georgelakos each scored a goal.
Peter Sarnowski put away his first career goal.
Garrett Smith and
Matt Keeler both recorded an assist.
Noah Citek (14-for-16),
Simon Hall (11-for-11), and
Dean Shacklett (1-for-1) combined for a season-best 26-for-28 on the faceoff. Citek collected 11 ground balls, Hall had 10, and Shacklett took one with one caused turnover.
Henry Pinamonti (2 CT, 2 GB),
Tanner Hower (1 CT, 3 GB),
Trey Weber (1 CT, 2 GB), and
Luca DiCarlo (1 CT) led the Bishops on the defensive end.
Kal Lonergan (W, 1-0) made his first career start in the cage and collected his first career win, playing the first 46:55 with a career-high six saves alongside a ground ball.
John Allen finished the final 13:05 and made two saves in his first appearance of the season.
