Bishops Suffer Close Loss in Game One at Oberlin, Tie Game Two in Extras

OBERLIN, Ohio – The Ohio Wesleyan University baseball team was on the road at Oberlin on Saturday for a doubleheader with the Yeomen. OWU kept up with OC in game one but suffered a one-run loss at 3-4. Game two saw Ohio Wesleyan scrape together a five-run ninth-inning comeback  to take a one-run lead before being forced into extras. The game would be called due to darkness after 11 innings at 8-8, ending in a tie.

The Battling Bishops are now 13-20-1 on the season and 2-9-1 in the NCAC. Oberlin is 16-16-2 overall and 4-7-1 in conference play.

GAME ONE: OHIO WESLEYAN 3, OBERLIN 4
The Bishops stayed with Oberlin through six innings of the first game, with the deciding run in favor of the hosts coming in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Yeomen jumped ahead with two runs in the first but that was quickly cut in half with a bases-loaded fielder's choice by Nate Colyer to score Zane Vitense in the second inning.

Oberlin made it 3-1 with another run in the bottom of the third, but the Red and Black scraped together runs in the fourth and sixth innings to tie it up at 3-3. In the fourth, Josh Bercaw came up with an RBI the hard way on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, scoring Vitense again. In the sixth, Colyer walked and advanced to second on a groundout before scoring on a single up the middle by Holden Tomlin.

The tie was broken by the Yeomen in the seventh, scoring another lone run to make it 4-3. From there, Ohio Wesleyan went quietly on six-straight outs, solidifying a 4-3 final score.

Grant Castle got the start and pitched 3.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits and three walks with two strikeouts. Marcus Suwinski offered 2.1 innings of two-hit relief, keeping Oberlin scoreless with one strikeout. Hank Holman (L, 1-1) was slated with the loss, pitching the final two innings and allowing one earned run on four hits and one walk with one strikeout.

Tomlin, Colyer, and Bercaw recorded the three RBIs for the Bishops. Tomlin tallied the only hit in the trio, going 1-for-4. Colyer also scored a run.

Vitense scored two runs, going 2-for-3 at the plate.

Colton Moone (1-for-3) and Nik Hilton (1-for-4) recorded the remaining two hits for the Red and Black.

GAME TWO: OHIO WESLEYAN 8, OBERLIN 8
Game two started out simple enough, with the two sides tied at 1-1 after five innings following one run each in the second. Henry Isaacs brought in the game's first run with runners on first and third, sending a sacrifice fly to right field to score Nate Colyer.

The Battling Bishops took a momentary lead with two runs in the top of the sixth before Oberlin snatched it away with five runs in the bottom half. Again it was Isaacs bringing in Colyer, this time with a single up the middle with Coyler on third and Matt Spencer on first. Spencer then scored the second run on a single to center by Reynaldo Pelaez.

The Bishops entered the ninth inning facing a 7-3 deficit following another run for the Yeomen in the seventh. Up against the wall, the Red and Black answered the call with five runs to take the lead at 8-7. Alex Snyder started it off with a single to left, advancing to third on a wild pitch and a single by Nik Hilton, before scoring on another wild pitch. Next, Zane Vitense walked, followed by a single by Coyler to score Hilton and put Vitense on third. Vitense then scored on a passed ball that also allowed Coyler to advance to second. The bases were then loaded with a walk by Pelaez and a single by Michael Malone. Marcus Suwinski would then reach on a throwing error by the shortstop, allowing Pelaez and Colyer to score.

Unfortunately, Oberlin ended up tying the game at 8-8 with one run in the bottom of the ninth. The 10th and 11th innings passed with little action on the basepaths before the game was ultimately called due to darkness, officially ending in a tie.

OWU used seven pitchers with Nate Cory (2.1 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 0 BB, 2 SO), Jacob Lowery (2.2 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 BB, 1 SO), Tyler Mathews (0.2 IP, 4 ER, 3 H, 1 BB, 1 SO), Logan Schnell (0.1 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 1 BB, 0 SO), J.J. Earley (1.2 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 3 BB, 1 SO), Cam McKenzie (2.1 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 3 BB, 3 SO), and Owen Tornow (1.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 BB, 1 SO) all making an appearance.

Isaacs drove in two runs and was 1-for-3 at the plate.

Colyer scored three runs and went 2-for-5 with one RBI.

Pelaez reached four times in six plate appearances, scoring one and driving in one while going 1-for-3 with three walks.

Snyder and Hilton were both 2-for-6 with a run scored. Snyder had a double.

Spencer scored once and went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Vitense was 1-for-5 with a run scored.
