GAMBIER, Ohio – The Ohio Wesleyan University softball team continued conference play on Saturday with a doubleheader at Kenyon. Neither game would go Ohio Wesleyan's way, with game one going five innings at 9-1, and game two going six innings at 14-6.
The Battling Bishops slip to 7-27 on the season and 2-10 in the NCAC. The Owls move to 19-19 overall and 7-5 in conference play.
GAME ONE: OHIO WESLEYAN 1, KENYON 9
The Bishops' only run of game one came right at the beginning in the first inning.
Rylea Gist got on with a double to right center and would score on an ensuing single by
Jessie Spurling. The Red and Black threatened again in the third but ultimately came up empty-handed. On the other side, Kenyon scored three in the second and six in the fifth to walk away with a 9-1 win.
Olivia Basil (L, 3-10) got the start in the circle and pitched the first four innings, allowing eight earned runs on three hits and three walks with five strikeouts.
Shelby Morris pitched in the fifth, allowing one earned run on one hit.
Gist, Spurling, and Morris were all 1-for-2. Gist hit OWU's only double and scored the only run. Spurling recorded the Red and Black's only RBI.
Chameron Vanden Eynden and
Rylee Myers were both 1-for-3.
GAME TWO: OHIO WESLEYAN 6, KENYON 14
The Battling Bishops bounced back to put six runs on the board in game two with two in each the first, second, and fifth innings. Unluckily, the Owls also increased their run output in game two with seven in the first, one in each the third and fourth, and five in the sixth to walk off with the 14-6 win.
Rylee Myers and
Rylea Gist got it started as the game's first baserunners, reaching on a single and an error. Myers scored the first run on a productive groundout by
Jessie Spurling, followed by Gist scoring the second run on a single by
Kelsey Shiley to make it 2-0.
Shelby Morris started the response to the seven-run bottom of the first for Kenyon by reaching on a hit-by-pitch and stealing second. She then scored on a single by
Chameron Vanden Eynden. Vanden Eynden came across after a single in the next at-bat by
Rylee Myers, making it a 7-4 ballgame.
Ohio Wesleyan's final two runs of the day came via Vierra Barrett and Gist. Barrett walked and advanced to third on a double by Gist before both scored on a Shiley single.
Emma Dahlstrom (L, 0-6) got the start, allowing three earned runs on three hits and a walk.
Makenna Knisley pitched the majority of the game with 5.2 innings, allowing seven earned runs on 11 hits and three walks with two walks.
Olivia Basil made an appearance in the sixth, allowing one hit.
Shiley drove in three runs on a 2-for-3 day.
Myers was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.
Vanden Eynden finished 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Spurling recorded the other RBI.
Gist hit 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
Barrett and Morris scored the remaining two runs.
