GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The Ohio Wesleyan University baseball team traveled across state lines for a midday doubleheader at DePauw on Wednesday. The Battling Bishops got on the board early in game one but would be shutout the rest of the day, dropping game one 8-2 and game two 18-0.
OWU drops to 10-14 on the season, 1-5 in the NCAC. DePauw improves to 18-8 and 4-2 in conference.
GAME ONE: OHIO WESLEYAN 2, DePAUW 8
The Red and Black cracked the scoreboard first in game one, scoring in the second inning and holding a two-run lead until the fifth. It started with a
Nik Hilton walk, followed by
Austin Biggin reaching on a fielder's choice. That was followed by walks from
Holden Tomlin and
Josh Bercaw to load the bases.
Michael Malone then got an easy RBI with a walk to bring home Biggin.
Colton Moone was next up and earned an RBI the hard way with a hit by pitch, bringing in Tomlin to make it 2-0.
Unfortunately, that was it for Ohio Wesleyan on the scoreboard. DePauw went on to put up six in the fifth and two in the sixth to take an 8-2 victory.
Parker Tomlin (L, 4-2) got the nod and lasted 4.2 innings before allowing six earned runs on six hits and three walks with three strikeouts.
Marcus Suwinski (1.1 IP, 2 ER, 2 H, 1 BB, 2 SO),
Tyler Mathews (1.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 BB, 2 SO), and
Jacob Lowery (1.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 SO) pitched out of the bullpen.
Holden Tomlin,
Alex Snyder, and Hilton recorded the only three hits of the game for the Bishops. Tomlin also scored a run.
Malone and Moone each earned an RBI. Malone also reached twice on walks.
Biggin came around to score once.
GAME TWO: OHIO WESLEYAN 0, DePAUW 18
The Battling Bishops were held to just four hits in game two, unfortunately unable to string anything together to get on the board. OWU's best chance came in the fourth inning with
Colton Moone walking and advancing to third on an ensuing
Marcus Suwinski single, where he was ultimately stranded. On the other side, DePauw put up six runs in the third inning, eight in the fourth, and four in the fifth to charge ahead to seven-inning 18-0 win.
Grant Castle (L, 0-2) got the start and went 2.2 innings with six earned runs on six hits and three walks with two strikeouts.
Nate Cory (1.0 IP, 4 ER, 2 H, 2 BB, 0 SO),
Logan Schnell (0.1 IP, 4 ER, 3 H, 2 BB, 0 SO),
J.J. Earley (0.2 IP, 4 ER, 4 H, 1 BB, 1 SO), and
Hank Holman (1.1 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 SO) offered relief.
Michael Malone was 2-for-3 with a double.
Suwinski went 1-for-2 and reached on a walk.
Holden Tomlin hit 1-for-4.
