Steve Runge is in his fourth season as director of golf and head coach of the men's and women's golf teams at Ohio Wesleyan University.
Last year, the Battling Bishop men finished seventh in the North Coast Athletic Conference, while the Bishop women placed fifth.
Runge came to Ohio Wesleyan after 8 seasons as head men's coach at the University of Central Arkansas. During his first 4 years at UCA, the Bears improved from 11th place in the Southland Conference tournament to fourth place. He coached 3 Southland Conference Player of the Year selections.
Prior to Central Arkansas, Runge was head coach at Clayton (Ga.) State University for 3 seasons. The Lakers improved from an eighth-place finish in the Peach Belt Conference during Runge's first season to a fifth-place showing in the Peach Belt and a 14th-place finish at the NCAA Division II regional tournament during his third season. He coached a Peach Belt Player of the Year and a second-team All-American at Clayton State.
Runge served as an instructor at the David Leadbetter Golf Academy in Bradenton, Fla., from 2007-11 before taking the Clayton State position. He was a professional golfer for 15 years, including 9 years on the Web.com tour, recording victories at the 1997 Utah Open, the 2000 Richmond Open, and the 2001 Panama Open as well as the Montgomery Sports Tour event. He qualified for the Buick Open and the Hardees Classic on the PGA Tour in 1993.
He is a 1992 graduate of Ohio State, majoring in education. During his Buckeye career, he was a 3-year letterman under Coach Jim Brown and served as co-captain of the team as a senior in 1992. The Buckeyes won the 1990 Big Ten championship and finished 10th at the NCAA Division I championships. As a junior golfer, Runge was an American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) first-team All-American in 1986.
