I ended up choosing Ohio Wesleyan because of all the opportunities it had to offer me.

Name:  Katie Chittum

Class Year:  2024

Major:  Mathematics with a minor in adolescence to young adult education

Why did you choose Ohio Wesleyan?
I ended up choosing Ohio Wesleyan because of all the opportunities it had to offer me.  I was named an Education Fellow, am a part of the Honors Program, and it allowed me to continue playing softball, which became more important to me once my senior softball season was canceled due to COVID-19.

Why did you choose your major?
I have always had an interest in math and working with numbers.  Specifically, I like how, unlike most other subjects, there is typically only one correct answer.  I added the education component because as a high school math teacher, I will be able to do math problems and teach others about math concepts every day.

Why did you choose to compete in sports at Ohio Wesleyan?
When I went on my overnight visit during the fall of my senior year, I got to meet the softball team and everyone was really friendly and inviting.  I even played mini cornhole with one of the players from the team!  During a typical year, my pitching coach would also come to practices to work with the team, which was a big factor in my decision.

Why did you choose your event/position?
I don't remember why I started pitching in the first place, but I started at a young age and have never stopped practicing and going to lessons.  Although at times it seems like a lot of extra work compared to some other positions, I really enjoy it and its central role in the game.

Why do you like your event/position?
I like pitching because it allows you to be involved in every play.  During close games, there can be a lot of pressure on you to perform well, but it is also very rewarding and fun.

What event/sport other than your own would you like to try?
I'd like to try to play cornhole competitively.  Last year, when the typical sports played on ESPN were shut down, I watched the American Cornhole League championships on TV.  I've always liked playing cornhole for fun, but now I know some of the terms they use and my parents even bought me my own set of OWU bags!

If you could have a super power, what would it be?
I would probably choose teleportation. I don’t like to drive, so that way, if I ever wanted to go (or leave) anywhere quickly, I would be able to.

If you could visit another time, when would it be and why?
I would like to visit the future because I think it would be interesting to see all of the new things that have been invented and all of the items from our time that have become obsolete.

Which reality show would you like to star on and why?
I would like to star on Fixer Upper.  I enjoy watching a lot of the shows on HGTV, but I like Chip and Joanna’s design style and would trust them to make any house into a home I would love.  Also, watching the show has helped me figure out what kind of designs I like best and maybe I could even get a piece designed by Clint Harp!
