...I knew that it would feel like I was missing something, so I looked for colleges that would allow me to study and run at the same time.

Name:  Blake Johnson

Class year:  2024

Major:  Politics and government

Why did you choose Ohio Wesleyan?
It felt like home.  I knew instantly that it was where I was meant to be.

Why did you choose your major?
I'm interested in public policy, and it seemed like a good fit to make the connections to get involved.

Why did you choose to compete in sports at Ohio Wesleyan?
When I graduated high school, I had run for six years of my life.  I knew that it would feel like I was missing something, so I looked for colleges that would allow me to study and run at the same time.

What is your favorite memory on an Ohio Wesleyan team?
Oh gosh, there are too many to count.  I would say if I had to choose, all the times that we spend playing video games and spikeball together.

Do you have any pre-event rituals or superstitions?
It sounds strange, but every night before a good race, I have gotten horrible sleep, so I take that as a good omen.

Why do you like your event?
I'm a distance guy through and through.  The 5K and 10K and are my bread and butter, and I like them because of the work that they require.  You can't just go out there and run 30 miles a week and call it a day.  It requires discipline, grit, and a LOT of mileage.  I love that!

What is your number one goal, personal or team, for this season?
I want to get all-conference in the 10K and help the team win conference.

Is there a specific coach or teammate who has helped you get where you are?
My teammate Simon.  There was a point when I felt that I couldn’t handle the balance between academics and athletics, so I wanted to quit.  Simon talked me out of it, and here I am.

What is your favorite place to eat in Delaware, and what is your go-to dish there?
Yokai Ramen Bistro, though I usually switch it up each time.

Which three people, living or dead, would you like to share a meal with?
Christopher Hitchens, Malcolm X, and Jesus

What is your ideal travel destination?
I would love to travel to London.

What is your favorite place that you have traveled to as an OWU student-athlete?
Holland, Michigan.  That was where we went for my sophomore year of cross country for regionals, and it was a beautiful place and an even better race.

What advice would you give to someone considering becoming a student-athlete?
Work hard, play hard.  It's easy to get bogged down in school, and even athletics sometimes.  Remember that your sport requires dedication and grit, but also remember that you are a human.

What is your favorite season and why?
Fall...cross country, baby!
