Name:  Mack Fincham

Class year:  2026

Majors:  Astrophysics, mathematics

Why did you choose Ohio Wesleyan?
I chose Ohio Wesleyan because of many factors, the strongest being the physics department's fun and engaging staff.  The track team also showed a strong bond when I made a visit.  Both of these tie into the community, which is truly what made the difference.

Why did you choose your majors?
I chose astrophysics because I was bored by learning all about earth sciences throughout all education prior to college.  I figured I didn't know enough about space and once the doors were open I was hooked.

What is your favorite memory on an Ohio Wesleyan team?
My favorite memory of the track team would be when we had some team bonding.  My teammate Joel was playing "All of Me" by John Legend on a piano while the rest of us sang.  Very sappy but it stuck with me.

Why did you choose your event?
I chose to do the heptathlon/decathlon because I've always enjoyed trying to learn a variety of new things and in this case it was 10 events.

What athletic or academic achievement/accomplishment are you most proud of?
I am most proud of being inducted into the physics honor society Sigma Pi Sigma.

What did you do to put yourself in position to achieve that?
I made 2 friends in intro physics who I spent a lot of time studying with and they kept me sane through it all.  Funny enough, they were the other two inducted with me.

Which is your favorite event in a combined-events meet?  Which event provides you the biggest challenge?
My favorite event in a combined-events meet would have to be pole vault.  It's a very hard event to master but as things start to click it's very rewarding.  Without a doubt the most challenging event has been long jump.  It seems pretty straightforward but I struggle to get the pop I need to really carry me far.

What is your number one goal, personal or team, for this season?
I have 2 goals coming into every season and that's to beat who I was and to contribute to the team as much as I can.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
My superpower of choice would be water bending from "Avatar: The Last Airbender."

If you could visit another time, when would it be and why?
With the ability to time travel I would go back to the '80s, when music was much better than it is currently.

What is your favorite book and why?
My favorite book is "Astrophysics for People in a Hurry" by Neil deGrasse Tyson because it was a great opportunity to learn about what interests me without having to take a full class.
