Senior forward Tyler Bryant (Chillicothe/Unioto) and senior midfielder Tyler Wall (Columbus/Upper Arlington) scored 2 goals apiece to help second-ranked Ohio Wesleyan defeat Allegheny in the Bishops' North Coast Athletic Conference season finale on Saturday at Roy Rike Field.
With the win, Ohio Wesleyan clinches the NCAC championship. The NCAC title is Ohio Wesleyan's third straight, sixth in the last 7 years, and 19th overall in the 27 seasons of NCAC competition.
Ohio Wesleyan will be the No. 1 seed in next week's conference tournament and will host Allegheny a tournament semifinal game at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. The win also extended Ohio Wesleyan's unbeaten string in NCAC games to 31 games (30-0-1).
The Bishops took the lead in the fourth minute when Wall played the ball ahead to Bryant, who sent a shot inside the left post.
Wall increased the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 2-0 with a run into the box and a shot in the 34th minute.
Junior forward Matt Bonfini (Dublin/Coffman) made it 3-0 late in the first half, fielding a centering pass from freshman forward Jon Stegner (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) on the left side and sending a shot from the right side into the back of the Gator net with 1:59 left in the period.
Wall made it a 4-0 game with another run into the box in the 50th minute, and Bryant finished off the evening's scoring when freshman midfielder Paolo Bucci (Dublin/Bishop Watterson) centered the ball from the right side to the middle and Bryant hit the shot from in front of the Allegheny goal.
Ohio Wesleyan outshot Allegheny, 24-7. Neither sophomore Paul Hendricks (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) nor junior Steve Gobel (Wilbraham, Mass./Loomis Chaffee (Conn.)) were tested in completing the shutout in the Ohio Wesleyan goal. John Lichina made 7 saves in the Allegheny goal.
