Junior forward Matt Bonfini (Dublin/Coffman) scored Ohio Wesleyan's first 2 goals and junior forward Travis Wall (Columbus/Upper Arlington) had a hand in each of the Bishops' first 3 goals as 24th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan blanked Principia in the first round of the adidas®-Fred Myers Invitational on Friday at Roy Rike Field.
In Friday's opener, Capital defeated Adrian, 1-0.
Saturday's second round will open with Capital against Principia at 5 p.m., to be followed by Adrian against Ohio Wesleyan at 7:30 p.m.
The Bishops took the lead in the 14th minute when senior midfielder Ryan Harmanis (Hilliard/Davidson) sent the ball ahead to Wall, who played it ahead to Bonfini, who slipped a shot inside the right post.
Five minutes later, Wall and Bonfini clicked again, with Wall sending the ball in from the right side and Bonfini finishing from the middle for a 2-0 Bishop lead.
Midway through the half, the Bishops extended their lead to 3-0. Ohio Wesleyan had earned a corner kick, and senior back Eric Laipple (Westerville/South) sent the ball into the box. Freshman forward Jon Stegner (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) flicked the ball to Wall, who finished the chance with 19:50 left in the half.
Harmanis finished off the night's scoring by heading home a volley from junior midfielder Dylan Stone (Easton, Conn./Barlow) in the 33rd minute.
Ohio Wesleyan outshot Principia, 19-2. Sophomore Paul Hendricks (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) had 1 save during the first 64-plus minutes of play, and junior Steve Gobel (Wilbraham, Mass./Loomis Chaffee (Conn.)) was not tested during final 25 minutes of action. Samuel Thomas finished with 4 saves for the Panthers.
Friday's first game saw Capital score midway through the second half to defeat Adrian.
The deciding goal came in the 72nd minute when Cory Trump sent a high, arching shot over Bulldog keeper Alex Pavlika and into the Adrian goal.
Capital outshot Adrian, 23-6. Bob Weisgarber had 1 save in working the complete-game shutout for Capital, while Pavlika finished with 4 saves for the Bulldogs.
