Senior forward Tyler Wall (Columbus/Upper Arlington) scored twice and senior back Eric Laipple (Westerville/South) added a goal and an assist, and the Ohio Wesleyan defense held Adrian to 5 shots as the 24th-ranked Bishops blanked the Bulldogs in the second round of the adidas®-Fred Myers Invitational on Saturday at Roy Rike Field.
In Saturday's first game, Capital took an early lead and pulled away during the second half to defeat Principia.
Wall and Laipple combined to give the Bishops the lead in the fourth minute of Saturday's nightcap. Laipple crossed the ball to Wall, who finished the chance inside the right post just 3:45 into the action.
Laipple increased the Bishop lead to 2-0 with a 25-yard blast from the right side in the 11th minute.
The Bishops added to the lead in the second half when junior forward Travis Wall (Columbus/Upper Arlington) sent the ball ahead to junior midfielder Dylan Stone (Easton, Conn./Barlow), who sent it across to junior midfielder Tevon Levien (Lower Valley, Cayman Islands/Chesire (Conn.) Academy). Levien finished the chance from the right side for a 3-0 Ohio Wesleyan lead in the 52nd minute.
Tyler Wall headed home a crossing pass from freshman midfielder Matt Shadoan (Dublin Scioto) in the 65th minute, and senior forward Tyler Bryant (Chillicothe/Unioto) finished off the scoring with a goal off a feed from freshman midfielder Matt Dodrill (Westerville/North) in the 82nd minute.
Ohio Wesleyan outshot Adrian, 21-5. Sophomore Paul Hendricks (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) was not tested in the Bishop goal while posting his second shutout of the season. Alex Pavlika had 3 saves for Adrian.
In Saturday's opener, Capital took a 1-0 lead when Jeremy Sampson served the ball in from the left side and Josh Thabourne finished at the right post in the 10th minute.
Sampson set up the Crusaders' second goal as well, sending the ball into the Principia penalty area, where Daniel McCarthy chipped it over Panther keeper Samuel Thomas. Tim McCarthy added a goal in the 86th minute, scoring off a corner kick from Collin King.
Capital outshot Principia, 27-11. Bob Weisgarber stopped 3 shots for the Crusaders, while Thomas finished with 6 saves for the Panthers.
Tyler Wall received the Dick Gauthier Award as the Fred Myers Invitational's Most Valuable Player.
He was joined on the all-tournament team by Stone, junior back Andrew Miller (Medina), senior midfielder Ryan Harmanis (Hilliard/Davidson), and senior back Brian Greene (Beavercreek).
The Fred Myers Invitational, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Delaware County, has been one of the featured events on the Battling Bishops' schedule for 33 seasons. It honors Fred Myers, longtime soccer and lacrosse coach at Ohio Wesleyan. This year's tournament championship is the 26th for Ohio Wesleyan in the 33 years that the Myers Invitational has been held.
