Fain Stands Out for Volleyball

DePauw 3, Ohio Wesleyan 0

Sophomore outside hitter Katie Fain (Vandalia/Butler) paced the Ohio Wesleyan offense in a North Coast Athletic Conference match against DePauw on Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

The Tigers defeated the Bishops by scores of 25-10, 25-9, 25-16.

Sophomore middle hitter Tamra Londot (Utica) blasted a pair of kills to power the Bishop offense in the first set, and after Fain contributed a kill, Ohio Wesleyan was within 8-6. DePauw then took off on a 14-3 run that included 3 kills by Katie Petrovich, and after giving up a point on a Kylee Lehrman service error, the visitors scored the final 3 points of the set on a Petrovich ace and kills by Paige Thompson and Abby Balbach.

Lehrman bounced back to zip consecutive service aces to highlight DePauw's set-opening 8-2 run in the second set. Junior outside hitter Megan Weissenberger (Toledo/Central Catholic) had a pair of kills as Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 10-6, but the Tigers countered with a 13-2 spree highlighted by Balbach, who collected 2 kills and 2 service aces.

Ohio Wesleyan kept close in the third set, closing to within 15-14 after a 5-1 run that featured a Weissenberger kill, but DePauw struck with another quick burst, reeling off 7 straight points. Mary Kate Etling and Balbach had 2 kills apiece during that run, and each contributed another kill as the Tigers finished off the set and the match.

Fain led the Bishops with 7 kills, while Weissenberger finished with 5. Junior setter Brittany Vickers (Newark/Utica) dished out 16 assists and added 6 digs, and Weissenberger had a team-high 8 digs and shared the team lead with 2 blocks.
