Ohio Wesleyan 2, Wabash 0
Freshman midfielder Brian Schaefer (Chatham, N.J.) had a hand in both Ohio Wesleyan goals, and junior back Ben Witkoff (Columbus/Gahanna Lincoln) scored his first collegiate goal to help Ohio Wesleyan to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Wabash on Wednesday at Roy Rike Field.
Ohio Wesleyan was on the attack early, with sophomore midfielder Colton Bloecher (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) testing Wabash keeper Matt Paul with a shot during the first minute of play. Junior midfielder Ian O'Keefe (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) also had a shot saved by Paul, this coming in the fourth minute, and Blocher's shot off a Bishop corner kick was snared by Paul in the fifth minute.
Schaefer put the Bishops on the scoreboard in the 14th minute. Freshman midfielder Gunnar Bloecher (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) centered the ball from the left end line to Schaefer in the middle, and Schaefer's hard shot sliced inside the right post.
Ohio Wesleyan increased its lead to 2-0 in the 29th minute. After a Wabash foul, junior midfielder Matt Shadoan (Dublin/Scioto) sent the restart into the Little Giant penalty area. Schaefer headed the ball toward the goal, with Paul making the save, but Paul was unable to control the rebound and Witkoff was there to knock it home for his first collegiate goal.
The Bishops would outshoot the Little Giants, 20-2, during the second half, but were not able to add to their lead.
"This was a good game," said Bishop head coach Jay Martin. "We got everybody in, and we tried Jacob (Eganhouse) in the back with Kit (North), and he did a great job settling things down back there. We still need some work in the final third. When you have 40 shots and get only two goals, that's not enough."
Ohio Wesleyan outshot Wabash, 40-6. Senior Paul Hendricks (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) had 3 saves in posting the shutout in the Ohio Wesleyan goal. Paul finished with 8 saves in the Little Giant goal.
