Ohio Wesleyan 1, Oberlin 0
Sophomore midfielder Colton Bloecher (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) scored the game's only goal as 25th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan defeated Oberlin in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Tuesday at Roy Rike Field.
Ohio Wesleyan enjoyed the edge in offensive play during the first half, outshooting the Yeomen by a count of 17-4, but Oberlin keeper Brandt Rentel came up with 5 saves during the period to keep the game scoreless. Rentel twice stopped shots by freshman midfielder Brian Schaefer (Chatham, N.J.), once in transition in the 13th minute and another from point-blank range off a Bloecher crossing pass in the 22nd minute. Junior midfielder Ian O'Keefe (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) also had a pair of shots saved, those coming in the 21st and 23rd minutes.
Bloecher put the Bishops ahead in the second minute of the second half, firing a shot that Rentel stopped, then staying with the play and scoring on the offensive rebound.
Senior goalkeeper Paul Hendricks (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) made 2 saves during the second half to keep the shutout going, grabbing shots by Andrew Wise in the 70th and 78th minutes. Oberlin's best scoring chance came in the 84th minute, when Matt Tunzi got a look from the left side, but his shot went across the goal mouth and over the right end line.
Bloecher came close to providing some insurance with a header off a corner kick in the 89th minute, but Rentel was there to make the save.
"This was a good win for us," said Bishop head coach Jay Martin. "Clearly, we should have scored more goals -- we've been having trouble with that -- but the good news is that a month ago, that would've been a 1-1 game. Our defense is getting better, and we were able to use a lot of people tonight."
Ohio Wesleyan outshot Oberlin, 35-7. Hendricks made 4 saves in posting the shutout in the Ohio Wesleyan goal. Rentel finished with 11 saves in the Yeomen goal.
