DePauw 3, Ohio Wesleyan 2
Senior back Kit North (Powell/Bishop Watterson) converted a penalty kick to wipe out a 2-1 deficit, but DePauw scored late in the first overtime period to escape with a win over 13th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan in a North Coast Athletic Conference contest on Saturday at Roy Rike Field.
The loss was Ohio Wesleyan's first in NCAC play since Oct. 6, 2007, snapping the Bishops' conference-record 42-game unbeaten streak in NCAC games. Ohio Wesleyan had compiled a 40-0-2 conference record during that run.
Ohio Wesleyan had taken the lead in the 52nd minute when freshman forward Brian Schaefer (Chatham, N.J.) won the ball from a Tiger defender deep in the left corner, then centered the ball to sophomore midfielder Colton Bloecher (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange), whose diving header found the back of the DePauw net.
DePauw answered in the 59th minute as George Elliott sent the ball from the left end line into the middle of the field to Alieu Musa, who fired a shot back into the left side of the Bishop goal.
The Tigers took the lead less than 3 minutes later on a similar play, with Elliott centering the ball from the left side to Nate Snyder, whose shot found the right side of the Ohio Wesleyan goal.
The Bishops nearly evened the score in the 66th minute after earning a corner kick. Junior midfielder Matt Shadoan (Dublin/Scioto) sent the ball into the box, where a header by Bloecher was stopped by Tiger keeper Tony Halterman, and North's follow shot was blocked by the DePauw defense.
The equalizer came in the 71st minute after freshman midfielder Gunnar Bloecher (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) was hauled down inside the DePauw penalty area. North stepped to the spot and converted the penalty kick to even the game at 2-2.
Senior goalkeeper Paul Hendricks (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) stopped 3 Tiger shots down the stretch as regulation time ended, and the game headed into overtime.
In the 99th minute, DePauw's Andy Morrison fired a shot that was blocked by the Bishop defense. The ball rattled around the top of the penalty area and bounced out to Musa, who sent a 20-yard shot into the right side of the Bishop goal to end the game.
"This was a very disappointing game to lose," said Bishop head coach Jay Martin. "The good news was that we kept fighting back, but we gave up some bad goals. You don't give up three goals on your home field. Colton and Schaefer played well, but until we get as excited to play as the people who are playing us, we're not going to win many games."
Ohio Wesleyan outshot DePauw, 26-17. Hendricks finished with 6 saves, while Halterman had 4 saves in the Tiger goal.
