Senior guard Andy Winters (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) hit a 3-pointer to highlight a game-opening 7-0 run, and junior guard Taylor Rieger (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) sank a pair of trifectas during a 9-0 burst to close out the first half as Ohio Wesleyan topped Marietta in the championship game of the Marietta Shrine Tournament on Saturday in Marietta.
Senior post Marshall Morris (Tulsa, Okla./Jenks) put the Bishops on the scoreboard with a tip-in, and a Winters 3-pointer and a lay-in from junior post Reuel Rogers (Columbus/Bexley) gave the Bishops a 7-0 lead just over 2 minutes into the game.
Marietta rallied behind the scoring of Garrett Stephenson, who had a lay-up, a 3-point play, and a jumper to help bring the Pioneers within 18-14, but the Bishops responded with a 9-0 spurt that included baskets from senior wing Greg White (Dayton/Centerville), Rieger, and Rogers, along with a 3-pointer by senior wing Vaughn Spaulding (Reynoldsburg) to move the lead back into double digits at 27-14.
Another Stephenson jumper cut the lead to 31-23 with 2:46 left in the first half, but a White 3-pointer and a pair of Reiger long-range bombs in a span of less than 2 minutes gave the Bishops a 40-23 halftime lead.
The Pioneers closed to within 48-37 early in the second half, but another White 3-pointer ended that run, and the Bishop lead would remain in double figures throughout the remainder of the contest.
Rogers and White shared the Ohio Wesleyan scoring lead with 14 points apiece, with Rieger adding 13 points and Winters kicking in 10 points and a game-high 9 assists.
Stephenson led Marietta with 14 points.
Winters was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. He was joined on the all-tournament team by Rieger and Rogers.
