Senior guard Andy Winters (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) sank a 3-pointer to give Ohio Wesleyan an early lead, but Rochester answered with a 13-2 run to take the lead for good and went on to a win in the championship game of Rochester's Holiday Inn-Airport Tournament on Sunday in Rochester, N.Y.
The Yellowjackets had taken a 2-0 lead on John DiBartolomeo's lay-in before Winters' 3-pointer gave the Bishops a 3-2 advantage.
Tyler Seidman gave Rochester the lead with a 3-pointer, and Nate Vernon and Rob Reid each added a pair of hoops before DiBartolomeo finished the run with a lay-in that gave the hosts a 15-5 lead with 13:10 left in the first half.
Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 22-17 midway through the period, getting 3-pointers from freshman post Claude Gray (Avon) and senior wing Anjuwon Spence (Cranston, R.I./Moses Brown), but Rochester responded with a 7-0 run highlighted by a Seidman 3-pointer to push the lead back into double digits.
The Bishops made one more push, getting a lay-in from senior post Marshall Morris (Tulsa, Okla./Jenks) and another from Winters to pull within 29-21 with 4:38 left in the half.
Rochester answered with an 8-0 burst, with Kent Coyne and Vernon hitting 3-pointers during that stretch, to extend the margin to 37-21 with 2:18 to play, and the lead would remain in double figures throughout the remainder of the contest.
Gray led the Bishops with a season-high 18 points, going 8-for-9 from the field. Spence and junior post Reuel Rogers (Columbus/Bexley) added 10 points apiece.
DiBartolomeo led Rochester with 24 points on the way to tournament Most Valuable Player honors.
Rogers and senior wing Vaughn Spaulding (Reynoldsburg) represented Ohio Wesleyan on the all-tournament team.
