Centre 2, Ohio Wesleyan 1
Senior back Kit North (Powell//Bishop Watterson) scored to give Ohio Wesleyan a 1-0 halftime lead, but Centre came back to tie the game and got the game-winner in the second overtime period to defeat the Bishops in a first-round matchup of the NCAA Division III tournament on Friday in Wheaton, Ill.
Centre advances to face the winner of Friday night's game between Transylvania and Wheaton on Saturday in Wheaton, Ill.
The Bishops enjoyed the edge in offensive play through most of the first half. During the first 12-plus minutes, freshman midfielder Brian Schaefer (Chatham, N.J.) and junior midfielder Jon Stegner (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) had shots saved by Colonel keeper Zach Sosnovich.
Sophomore midfielder Colton Bloecher (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) had a pair of header shots less than a minute apart, first in the 35th minute when a Centre defender cleared his shot off the goal line, earning a corner kick for the Bishops, and again on the ensuing corner kick, when his header hit the crossbar.
Two more Ohio Wesleyan corners ensued, with the Bishops getting a header from junior midfielder Taylor Rieger (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) that Sosnovich tracked down for the save.
It was another header that gave the Bishops the lead, this time when North connected on a pass from junior midfielder Matt Shadoan (Dublin/Scioto) with 2:37 left in the first half.
Centre evened the score with just under 20 minutes remaining in regulation time, when Ryan Garvey fielded a chip from Cameron Miller and found the back of the Bishop net.
Shadoan had a look at the game-winner during the waning moments of regulation, but Sosnovich was there for the save.
Senior goalkeeper Paul Hendricks (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) kept the game going with 3 saves during the first overtime period, including a stop of a Garvey shot during the final minute of play.
Garvey would record the game-winner during the second overtime, however, taking a pass from Austin Greer and finishing the chance at the 103:24 mark.
Ohio Wesleyan outshot Centre, 17-12. Hendricks finished with 4 saves in the Ohio Wesleyan goal. Sosnovich recorded 5 saves for Centre.
