Box Score
Ohio Wesleyan 76, Allegheny 62
Senior guard Andy Winters (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) posted the first triple-double by an Ohio Wesleyan men's basketball player and junior guard Taylor Rieger (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) scored 8 points during an 11-2 run that put the Bishops ahead to stay as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Allegheny in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Saturday in Meadville, Pa.
The win was the 200th victory at Ohio Wesleyan for head coach Mike DeWitt. He is 200-155 in his 13-plus seasons at the Bishop helm.
With the score tied at 23, freshman post Claude Gray (Avon) hit a jumper from the lane to give the Bishops the lead, then Rieger followed with a jumper from the lane and a 3-pointer for a 30-23 Bishop lead with 3:04 left in the half. Winters added a free throw before another Rieger trifecta extended the margin to 34-25 with 1:50 remaining.
The Gators closed to within 38-33 on Devone McLeod's buzzer-beating jumper, and opened the second half with another McLeod jumper to pull within 3 points, but a 7-0 run consisting of a Rieger 3-pointer and jumpers by junior post Reuel Rogers (Columbus/Bexley) and senior post Marshall Morris (Tulsa, Okla./Jenks) pushed the lead back into double digits at 52-41 with 13:41 left in regulation time.
Leading, 57-44, after a Winters 3-pointer, the Bishops saw the hosts come back with 3-pointers from Ryan Stanko and McLeod to make it a 57-52 game at the midway point of the half.
Senior wing Anjuwon Spence (Cranston, R.I./Moses Brown) hit a pair of 3-pointers to douse that Allegheny rally, and baskets from junior wing Dre White (Lima/Bath) and Rogers gave the Bishops a 67-54 advantage with 4:21 to play.
Winters finished with 12 points and recorded career bests with 11 rebounds and 13 assists, with the 13 assists also tying the school record set by Joe Thomas against Marietta on Feb. 12, 1977, and matched by Dirk Miller against Oberlin on Jan. 14, 1989.
Rieger led the Bishops with 25 points, and Rogers shared the team lead with 11 rebounds.
McLeod led Allegheny with 16 points.
