Ohio Wesleyan 87, Anderson 71
Junior guard Taylor Rieger (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) scored 5 points as Ohio Wesleyan opened the game with a 12-0 run and went on to defeat Anderson in non-conference action on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.
Senior wing Vaughn Spaulding (Reynoldsburg) opened the day's scoring by cashing in on a putback, and Rieger and senior guard Andy Winters (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) followed with jumpers before Rieger's pullup 3-pointer in transition extended the Bishop lead to 11-0. When Winters hit the first of 2 free throws at the 15:38 mark, the Ohio Wesleyan lead stood at 12-0.
Anderson, which missed its first 7 shots from the field, finally broke the scoring column on Max Mollaun's lay-in with 14:15 to play in the half, but the Bishops answered with 9 straight points on hoops by Rieger and Winters, a 3-pointer by freshman post Claude Gray (Avon), and a jumper from the lane by junior wing Dre White (Lima/Bath) to extend the margin to 21-2 with 12:05 left in the period.
Gray's jumper from the lane gave the Bishops a 25-5 lead at the midway point of the half, and a offensive rebound and dunk by junior post Reuel Rogers (Columbus/Bexley) with 5:35 remaining gave the Bishops their biggest lead of the half at 31-9.
Phil Hogan got hot for Anderson during the second half, scoring 9 straight points for the Ravens during one stretch, as the visitors pulled to within 79-67 with 3:51 left in regulation time, but Winters and Spaulding each drained a pair of free throws to push the lead back to 16 points with just over 2 minutes remaining, and a fast-break layin by Rogers slammed the door with 1:49 to play.
Rogers, who collected 10 rebounds during the first half alone, finished with team bests of 17 points and 12 boards, while Spaulding added 14 points.
Winters kicked in 13 points and 10 assists, with the double-double producing a double milestone. The 13 points raised his career total to 1004, making him the 27th Ohio Wesleyan men's basketball player to surpass the 1000-point mark. The 10 assists increased his career total to 479, moving him into third place on the Bishop career list ahead of Kirk Williamson, who had 470 assists from 1975-77 and 1978-80.
Hogan led Anderson with 29 points.
