Ohio Wesleyan 75, Bluffton 51
Senior guard Andy Winters (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) scored 5 points and senior post Marshall Morris (Tulsa, Okla./Jenks) added 4 more as Ohio Wesleyan opened the game with an 11-2 run and went on to defeat Bluffton in the championship game of the McDonald's Holiday Tournament, hosted by Bluffton College on Saturday in Bluffton.
Morris opened the evening's scoring witha jumper from the lane and Winters followed with a 3-pointer, and after a hoop by Bluffton's Will Pope, the Bishops collected lay-ins by Morris, Winters, and junior post Reuel Rogers (Columbus/Bexley) to take an 11-2 lead less than 3 minutes into the action.
The Beavers responded with baskets from Pope and Josh Johnson to pull within 11-6, but Marshall countered with a 3-pointer and junior guard Taylor Rieger (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) followed with a pair of free throws to push the margin back into double digits at 16-6 with 13:58 left in the first half.
Bluffton was within 6 points when Pope's lay-in made it a 27-21 game with 5:30 to play, but Ohio Wesleyan then went on an 8-0 run that included singles free throws by Rogers and Winters, lay-ins by Morris and senior wing Vaughn Spaulding (Reynoldsburg), and a pair of Winters free throws that gave the Bishops a 35-21 lead at the 3:43 mark.
A jumper and a 3-pointer by Winters extended the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 40-23, and Spaulding followed with a free throw for a 41-23 Bishop lead with 1:30 left in the half.
Bluffton opened the second half with a pair of Johnson free throws and a Dustin Kinn lay-in to close within a dozen points, but that was as close as the Beavers would get.
Winters led the Bishops with 15 points and 7 assists, while Morris and Rieger finished with 11 points apiece and freshman Claude Gray (Avon) added 10 points. Rogers grabbed a team-high 7 rebounds.
Kinn led Bluffton with 12 points.
Winters was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. He was joined on the all-tournament team by Rieger, Bluffton's Kinn and Johnson, Jerell Figueroa of Pitt-Johnstown, and Blake Addison of Wright State-Lake
