Ohio Wesleyan University head football coach Tom Watts was named a Regional Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association, it was announced by the AFCA today.
Watts was named the Region 2 Coach of the Year in NCAA Division III.
Watts guided the Battling Bishops to a 9-1 record and a share of the North Coast Athletic Conference championship this season, Ohio Wesleyan's first conference championship since 1989. The 9 wins tied the school record for victories in a season. Watts was named NCAC Coach of the Year, all in his first season as a head coach.
Watts was one of 5 Division III coaches honored by the AFCA, which also recognizes coaches in Division I FBS, Division I FCS, Division II, and NAIA. The Regional Coach of the Year awards are selected by active AFCA members who vote for coaches in their respective regions and divisions. The regional honorees will be recognized at the AFCA Coach of the Year Dinner on Tues., January 8, 2013, at the AFCA convention in Nashville
