Ohio Wesleyan 81, Kenyon 69
Senior guard Eric Easley (Columbus/Thomas Worthington) scored 5 points to cap a 9-0 first-half run that opened up a double-digit lead, and Ohio Wesleyan pulled away with torrid shooting in a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Kenyon on Wednesday in Gambier.
The Bishops took an early 11-6 lead on a 3-pointer by senior post Marshall Morris (Tulsa, Okla./Jenks), and extended that to 13-5 on a dunk by senior wing Vaughn Spaulding (Reynoldsburg).
Kenyon pulled within 15-14 on hoops by Julian Pavlin, Jonathan Amador, and Brien Comey, only to see the Bishops respond with a 9-0 run.
Junior wing Dre White (Lima/Bath) sank a pair of free throws and senior wing Anjuwon Spence (Cranston, R.I./Moses Brown) hit a jumper from the lane before Easley added a steal and lay-in, then capped the outburst with a 3-pointer for a 24-14 Bishop lead.
The Bishops did not allow Kenyon to come closer than 8 points during the remainder of the half, thanks in large part to shooting 60.7 (17-for-28) from the field during the period. The Lords pulled within 56-48 early in the second half after a Dan Voigt 3-pointer and a Pavlin jumper.
Ohio Wesleyan responded with a 12-0 run to pull away, collecting lay-ins from White, Morris, and freshman post Claude Gray (Avon), then jumpers by White, Morris, and junior guard Taylor Rieger (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) for a 68-48 lead with 9:26 remaining.
Kenyon whittled the margin to a dozen with a 8-0 run, closing to within 77-65 on Pavlin's jumper with 2:09 left, but that was as close as the Lords would come.
Senior guard Andy Winters (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) led the Bishops with 14 points and 5 assists. Morris added 13 points, Rieger finished with 10 points, and junior post Reuel Rogers (Columbus/Bexley) grabbed a team-high 7 rebounds.
Ikenna Nwadibia led Kenyon with 18 points.
