Ohio Wesleyan 2, Ohio Northern 0
Junior midfielder Matt Shadoan (Dublin/Scioto) and sophomore midfielder Colton Bloecher (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) combined for both Ohio Wesleyan goals as the Bishops defeated ninth-ranked Ohio Northern in non-conference action on Wednesday at Roy Rike Field.
Last November's Ohio Wesleyan-Ohio Northern matchup was one of the most exciting of the Battling Bishops' national championship run, and Wednesday's game picked up right where that left off.
Bloecher gave the Bishops the lead in the 12th minute, fielding a pass from Shadoan and sending a shot into the lower right corner of the Polar Bear goal.
The Polar Bears opened the second half on the offensive, maintaining possession in the Ohio Wesleyan end for most of the first 5 minutes of play. However, the Bishop defense turned in an outstanding effort, blocking 2 shots during that span and yielding just one corner kick in preserving the lead.
Bloecher set up Shadoan for an insurance goal in the 57th minute, taking the ball into the box and drawing Ohio Northern keeper Mac Church out of the goal, then zipping a crossing pass past Church to an onrushing Shadoan, who buried the shot inside the left post.
Ohio Northern appeared to have closed the deficit to 2-1 midway through the half with a score off a restart in the Ohio Wesleyan end, but the play was ruled offside.
Polar Bear forward Cameron Johnson had a pair of excellent looks in the closing minutes. During a scramble in front of the Bishop goal, Johnson had his shot cleared off the line by sophomore back Mason Hoge (Mason) with 12:05 remaining. In the 83rd minute, Johnson had a shot from close range hit the crossbar and carom off to the right side.
Ohio Wesleyan outshot Ohio Northern, 16-14. Senior Paul Hendricks (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) had 1 save in posting the shutout in the Ohio Wesleyan goal. Church finished with 3 saves in the Ohio Northern goal.
