Ohio Wesleyan 5, Case Reserve 0

Sophomore midfielder Colton Bloecher (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) notched his first collegiate hat trick to power 14th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan over Case Reserve in non-conference action on Wednesday at rain-soaked Roy Rike Field.

Bloecher put the Bishops on the scoreboard just over 2 minutes into the game, when his shot from the right side caromed off a Spartan defender and looped into the left side of the CWRU goal.

Ohio Wesleyan had a few chances to add to its lead, first in the ninth minute when junior midfielder Paolo Bucci (Dublin/Bishop Watterson) had a shot saved by Spartan keeper Jay Darby, then saw his follow shot go wide left, and again less than a minute later, when Darby batted away a shot by junior back Martin Tobias (Chesterfield, Mo./Whitfield School) just outside the right post.  Junior midfielder Jon Stegner (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) hit the crossbar with a shot in the 15th minute, and Darby saved another shot from Bucci in the 19th minute.

Bloecher made it 2-0 midway through the period, heading home a corner kick from junior midfielder Matt Shadoan (Dublin/Scioto), and the Bishops increased their lead to 3-0 when senior back Kit North (Powell/Bishop Watterson) converted a penalty kick in the 33rd minute.

Bloecher completed the hat trick in the 62nd minute, finishing a chance from in front after a Stegner crossing pass.  It marked Ohio Wesleyan's first hat trick since Oct. 26, 2001, when Ryan Miller scored thrice against Hiram at Roy Rike Field.

Freshman forward Brian Schaefer (Chatham, N.J.) finished off the evening's scoring in the 81st minute, blasting home a loose ball in the box after a corner kick by freshman forward Ricardo Balmaceda (Houston, Texas/The Village School).

"This was a very good game for us after Capital," said Bishop head coach Jay Martin.  "Our team goals were a shutout, and keeping their shot total under five, and we reached those.  Everyone played, and it was a great game for us to go into our conference schedule."

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Case Reserve, 35-4.  Neither senior Paul Hendricks (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) nor sophomore Colin Beemiller (Pickerington/North) were tested in splitting the shutout in the Ohio Wesleyan goal.  Darby and Ryan Koepka combined for 7 saves in the Spartan goal.
