Sophomore middle hitter Meigan Day (Port Clinton) recorded 10 kills to lead the Ohio Wesleyan offense in a North Coast Athletic Conference match against DePauw on Tuesday at Branch Rickey Arena.
The Tigers defeated the Bishops by scores of 25-12, 25-16, 25-18.
DePauw raced to a 9-1 lead in the first set, with Emma Peacha contributing a pair of kills and Faith Rolwes adding another. Ohio Wesleyan rallied with a pair of kills from Day and another by freshman outside hitter McKenna Kasper (Chagrin Falls/Hawken School), but the Tigers used a 5-0 run to extend the margin to 20-7 and finished off the set with the help of a Rolwes kill.
The Tigers built a 9-3 lead in the second set, breaking a 2-2 tie with a 7-1 run that included consecutive service aces from Brekiesha Weszely and kills by Peacha and Rolwes. Day and senior outside hitter Katie Fain (Vandalia/Butler) rallied Ohio Wesleyan with kills as the Bishops closed to within 11-6, and Ohio Wesleyan was still within 19-13 after kills by Day and freshman setter Shannon Schlater (Englewood/Northmont). DePauw answered by scoring the next 4 points, with Rolwes, Mary Kate Etling, and Peacha recording kills along the way, and closed out the set with a Sarah Burtenshaw kill.
Ohio Wesleyan took a 7-6 lead in the third set, getting kills from senior middle hitter Tamra Londot (Utica), Day, and Fain. The Bishops were still within 17-16 after back-to-back kills from Day, but DePauw used a 5-1 run to extend the lead to 22-17 and ended the set and the match with a kill by Kelly Doyle.
Day's 10 kills led the Bishops, while Londot finished with 8. Schlater dished out 24 assists.
Day led the Bishop defense with 2 blocks, and sophomore libero Danielle Birney (Toledo/Sylvania Southview) had a team-high 17 digs.
