West Virginia State Defeats Volleyball

Senior middle hitter Tamra Londot (Utica) and freshman setter Shannon Schlater (Englewood/Northmont) led the Ohio Wesleyan offense in a non-conference match against NCAA Division II entity West Virginia State on Saturday in Institute, W.Va.

The Yellow Jackets defeated the Bishops by scores of 25-18, 25-6, 25-21.

The first set opened up as a back-and-forth affair, with the teams tied 5 times in the early going.  Ohio Wesleyan took a 10-8 lead on a service ace by sophomore middle hitter Meigan Day (Port Clinton), and after 2 more ties, the Bishops still led, 12-11, on a kill by freshman outside hitter McKenna Kasper (Chagrin Falls/Hawken School).  The Yellow Jackets came back with a 5-0 run that included consecutive kills from Karee Vaughn. Ohio Wesleyan rallied to within 16-14 as Day and Kasper combined for a block, but West Virginia State answered with a 6-0 burst to extend the lead to 22-14, with Vaughn and Brittanee DeWine contributing kills, and the Yellow Jackets closed out the set with a kill from Hayley Kirby.

The Yellow Jackets raced to a 6-1 lead in the second set, with Madisen Mangus contributing a kill and a service ace along the way.  A Londot kill and a service ace from sophomore libero Danielle Birney (Toledo/Sylvania Southview) brought the Bishops within 6-3, but West Virginia State then went on a 10-1 spree that included 3 kills from Anneelise Albrecht and a pair of Brooke Cieslewski service aces.  Kirby compiled 4 kills and Albrecht added another ace as the Yellow Jackets ended the set with a 9-1 run.

Freshman outside hitter Rylee Komminsk (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) zipped back-to-back service aces as Ohio Wesleyan took a 6-2 lead in the third set, and the Bishops extended their lead to 14-9 as Londot had a kill and a block and Day added an ace.  The Yellow Jackets then reeled off 9 straight points, with Albrecht providing a kill and pairing with Erica Bickham on a pair of blocks along the way.  Down, 22-16, after kills from DeWine and Albrecht, the Bishops closed to within 24-21 as Day recorded consecutive kills and a service ace, but a Kirby kill closed out the set and the match.

Londot and Schlater shared the Bishop lead with 5 kills apiece, and Day finished with 4 kills.  Schlater also distributed a team-high 10 assists.

Day led the Bishop defense with 2 blocks, and Birney had a team-high 14 digs.
