Senior middle hitter Tamra Londot (Utica) and sophomore middle hitter Meigan Day (Port Clinton) recorded double-digit performances in kills to pace the Ohio Wesleyan offense, but Kenyon outlasted the Bishops in a North Coast Athletic Conference match on Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.
The Ladies defeated the Bishops by scores of 25-20, 25-23, 22-25, 25-20.
Kenyon took an early lead in the first set, breaking a 4-4 tie with a 5-1 burst that included back-to-back kills from Sierra DeLeon and a block from Hannah Shank and Maggie Hudson. Trailing, 12-7, the Bishops reeled off 3 straight points, highlighted by a Londot kill, to pull within 12-10. Kenyon answered with a 5-2 run that featured kills by DeLeon, Mary Jo Scott, and Amber Kraus, and the lead would fluctuate between 3 and 5 points for the remainder of the set.
Ohio Wesleyan raced to an early lead in the second set, collecting kills from Londot and Day on the way to a 5-2 advantage, and Ohio Wesleyan extended the lead to 14-9 on a Londot kill. Kenyon scored the next 4 points to pull within 14-13, and the Ladies came back to tie the set at 16 on kills by Kaitlyn Power and Shank. The Bishops answered with 3 straight points, with Londot recording a kill and a block, but Kenyon took the lead as Shank's service ace capped a 6-1 run that gave the Ladies a 22-20 lead. Senior outside hitter Katie Fain (Vandalia/Butler) followed with a kill and a block as the Bishops closed to within 23-22, but consecutive kills from Scott helped Kenyon score the final 3 points of the set to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Londot had a pair of kills as the Bishops took a 9-3 lead in the third set. Kenyon responded with a 9-3 run of its own, getting 2 kills from Scott and 2 kills and an ace from DeLeon to even the score at 12. After the teams traded points 10 times, leaving matters tied at 22, the Bishops scored the final 3 points to close out the set, with freshman outside hitter Rylee Komminsk (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) contributing a kill along the way.
A Londot kill and a service ace from sophomore libero Danielle Birney (Toledo/Sylvania Southview) helped Ohio Wesleyan to an early lead in the fourth set, but Kenyon broke a 3-3 tie with a 6-1 run that included kills by Kraus, Scott, and DeLeon, as well as a pair of blocks by Power. Ohio Wesleyan rallied later in the set, getting a kill from freshman setter Shannon Schlater (Englewood/Northmont) and a pair of Londot blocks to slice the deficit to 20-18. The Ladies held off the threat, however, with Scott recording 3 kills down the stretch to end the set and the match.
Londot led the Bishops with 15 kills, while Day finished with 11 kills. Schlater posted 41 assists.
Londot recorded 7 blocks to highlight the Bishop defense, while Birney finished with a team-high 22 digs.
