Ohio Wesleyan 78, Kenyon 60
Senior guard Taylor Rieger (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) scored 20 points and senior post Reuel Rogers (Columbus/Bexley) set a school record as Ohio Wesleyan opened its season with a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Kenyon on Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.
Kenyon had taken an early 7-5 lead on a 3-pointer by Julian Pavlin and a free throw by Brian Lebowitz.
Ohio Wesleyan reeled off the next 7 points, taking the lead for good on a 3-pointer by sophomore post Matt Jeske (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South), a Rogers jumper from the lane, and a fast-break bucket by Rieger.
Kenyon rallied to within 16-15 on Lebowitz's lay-in, only to have Rieger answer with a timely 3-pointer, and the Lords were still within 26-22 after a Jonathan Amador 3-pointer.
Another 7-0 Bishop run pushed the lead into double digits, with Ohio Wesleyan collecting a 3-pointer from sophomore post Claude Gray (Avon), and a pair of baskets by Rieger for a 33-22 lead with 4:30 left in the first half.
Ohio Wesleyan would lead by a 41-29 count at the intermission, and the Bishops opened the second half with an 11-4 burst that featured a Rogers 3-pointer, a pair of Gray lay-ins, and a Rieger basket that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 52-33 lead with 15:58 to go.
Rieger led the Bishops with 20 points. Rogers finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and blocked a school-record 9 shots to finish just short of a triple-double. Rogers' 9 rejections broke the school record of 8 he set last February at Denison. Gray also finished with a double-double, collecting 18 points and 10 boards.
Lebowitz led Kenyon with 14 points.
