Junior wing Dre White (Lima/Bath) hit a jumper that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 13-point second-half lead, but 14th-ranked Wooster rallied to send the game into overtime, then opened the extra session with a 10-2 burst in taking a North Coast Athletic Conference victory over the Bishops on Wednesday in Wooster.
Ohio Wesleyan had built a 40-31 halftime lead, but Wooster rallied to within 40-35 early in the second half.
Senior wing Vaughn Spaulding (Reynoldsburg) and junior guard Taylor Rieger (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) buried 3-pointers that extended the Bishop lead to 46-35, and after several minutes of alternating between 9-11 points, Ohio Wesleyan got jumpers from Rieger and White to make it a 58-45 game with 9:14 left in regulation time.
The Fighting Scots scored the next 8 points of the game, rallying behind Xavier Brown, who compiled a 3-point play, a pair of jumpers, and the first of 2 free throws to pull Wooster within 58-53 with 5:14 to go.
Senior post Marshall Morris (Tulsa, Okla./Jenks) sank the first of 2 free throws to end the Bishops' scoring drought at 5 minutes, and senior guard Andy Winters (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) hit the second of 2 free throws to give Ohio Wesleyan a 60-53 lead with 3:15 to play.
Ohio Wesleyan would not get off another field goal attempt for more than 3 minutes, however, as Wooster narrowed the margin with a Doug Thorpe 3-pointer and a Josh Claytor lay-in that brought Wooster within 60-58 with 1:17 to play. After a Winters turnover, Brown hit a jumper in the waning seconds of the shot clock, tying the game with :25 to play.
White got off a 3-pointer for the win in the final seconds of regulation, but the shot was off the mark.
Claytor opened the overtime period with a lay-in, and Thorpe followed with a lay-in for a 64-60 Wooster lead.
White answered with a jumper from the lane to bring the Bishops within 64-62, but Wooster countered with a Brown jumper, a Claytor tip-in, then got a pair of free throws from Evan Pannell to take a 70-62 lead with exactly a minute to play.
Rieger drilled a 3-pointer to make it a 2-possession game with :43 left, but Doug Thorpe sank a pair of free throws for Wooster, and after Morris hit both ends of a one-and-one with :20 remaining, Thorpe hit 2 more free throws to push the lead to 7 points with :18 to play.
Rieger led the Bishops with 18 points, while Winters followed with 15 points and 9 assists, and junior post Reuel Rogers (Columbus/Bexley) scored 10 points. Morris led the Bishops with 10 rebounds.
Brown led Wooster with 17 points.
