Cabrini 84, Ohio Wesleyan 81

Junior guard Taylor Rieger (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) sank a pair of free throws to bring 21st-ranked Ohio Wesleyan within a single point, but Cabrini withstood 2 potential lead-changing possessions and a potential game-tying shot in the final seconds to escape with a win over the Bishops in second-round action of the NCAA Division III tournament on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Cabrini advances to face Wooster in a third-round game to be played Saturday, March 16, on the campus of one of the competing institutions.

The Cavaliers had taken a 71-64 lead on Jeremy Knowles' 3-pointer with 5:29 left in regulation time, then tacked on a point when A.J. Williams hit the second of 2 free throws with 4:43 remaining.

Rieger drilled a 3-pointer on Ohio Wesleyan's next possession, and after a putback by Cabrini's DeLeon Floyd, it was Rieger connecting from long range again to bring the Bishops within 74-70 with 3:37 to go.

After Cabrini's Aaron Walton-Moss and Ohio Wesleyan junior post Reuel Rogers (Columbus/Bexley) traded a pair of free throws, Rogers converted a 3-point play to make it a 76-75 game with 2:03 left in regulation time.

Walton-Moss drove for a lay-in on the other end, but Rieger's pair of free throws brought the Bishops within 78-77 with 1:29 to go.

Walton-Moss then saw his lay-in bounce off the rim, and Rogers collected the rebound with a minute to play, giving Ohio Wesleyan the ball with a chance to take the lead.

Rieger misfired on his potential go-ahead jumper, and Walton-Moss started a fast break the other way, with Knowles finishing the play for an 80-77 Cavalier lead with :36 left.

Senior guard Andy Winters (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) drew a foul and sank both free throws to bring Ohio Wesleyan within one with :26 left.

With the Bishops pressing in the backcourt, Cabrini's Fran Rafferty was fouled with :22 left and hit the front end of the one-and-one, but missed the second shot, with Winters clearing the rebound.

On Ohio Wesleyan's ensuing possession, however, Knowles swiped the ball from Winters and drew a foul, then hit both free throws for an 83-79 Cabrini lead with :09.7 left.

Winters attempted to save some time on the inbounds pass, allowing the ball to roll until nearly midcourt before picking it up, but it was ruled that the ball had touched Winters and that 3 seconds had elapsed, and Ohio Wesleyan was to inbound the ball near midcourt with :06.7 remaining.

Winters drew a foul on the inbounds play and sank both free throws, brining the Bishops within 83-81, and Ohio Wesleyan fouled almost immediately.  Cabrini's Tim McDaniels missed the front end of the 2-shot foul, but hit the second shot to make it a 3-point game with just over 5 seconds to play.

Bringing the ball up himself, Winters pulled up and let fly with a 30-footer for the tie, but his shot was off the mark.  Senior post Marshall Morris (Tulsa, Okla./Jenks) got the rebound and whipped the ball to senior wing Anjuwon Spence (Cranston, R.I./Moses Brown) open on the left wing, but Spence was not able to get off a tying 3-point shot before the buzzer.

Ohio Wesleyan had used an 8-0 first-half run to turn a 20-19 deficit into a 27-20 lead, getting jumpers from junior wing Dre White (Lima/Bath) and freshman post Claude Gray (Avon), along with a pair of Winters free throws and a Gray lay-in.

The Bishops still led, 39-32, with 2:14 left in the half, but the Cavaliers rallied behind a Walton-Moss lay-in and 3 free throws from Rafferty after he was fouled on a 3-point attempt with :03 left in the period.

Ohio Wesleyan rebuilt its lead to 5 points early in the second half, the last time at 50-45 on Winters' fast-break lay-in with 15:52 left in regulation time.

Cabrini then held the Bishops to one basket during the next 5-plus minutes while Walton-Moss and Floyd took over the Cavalier offense.  Walton-Moss fed Floyd for a dunk, then drove for a lay-in himself before feeding Floyd on back-to-back lay-ins.  Rafferty then chipped in with a jumper, a 3-pointer, and a fast-break lay-in for a 60-53 Cabrini lead midway through the second half.

Winters led the Bishops with 22 points, and his team-high 6 assists raised his season total to a school-record 202.  Rieger added 15 points and White scored 11, and Rogers led the Bishops with 9 rebounds.

Walton-Moss scored a game-high 23 points and added 13 rebounds and 9 assists to finish a single helper short of a triple-double.  Rafferty added 19 points and Floyd scored 14 points.
