Senior middle hitter Tamra Londot (Utica) collected 10 kills as Ohio Wesleyan opened its season with a sweep of Wilmington during the first day of the annual Bishop Invitational on Friday at Branch Rickey Arena.
The Bishops defeated the Quakers by scores of 25-20, 25-11, 25-20.
Ohio Wesleyan finished strong in the first set, breaking a 20-20 tie to score the final 5 points to record the win. Londot pounded out back-to-back kills to give the Bishops a 22-20 lead, then contributed consecutive blocks to make it a 24-20 game. The Bishops then recorded set point on a Wilmington attack error.
The Bishops raced to a 13-4 lead in the second set with the help of 2 kills from sophomore middle hitter Meigan Day (Port Clinton), another Londot kill, and a service ace from sophomore libero Danielle Birney (Toledo/Sylvania Southview). Kills by Londot and senior outside hitter Katie Fain (Vandalia/Butler) helped the Bishops increase the margin to 19-6, and kills from freshman right-side hitter Kacy Gurewitz (San Ramon, Calif./Dougherty Valley) and Londot made it a 24-9 score.
Wilmington had rallied to within 21-19 in the third set on a kill by Tabby Biegler when the Bishops bounced back with a pair of Fain kills to take a 23-20 lead. Day followed with a kill to move Ohio Wesleyan to match point, and Day and Gurewitz teamed up on a block to end the match.
Londot led the Bishops with 10 kills, while Day delivered 9 and Fain finished with 8. Freshman setter Shannon Schlater (Englewood/Northmont) distributed 31 assists.
Defensive leaders for Ohio Wesleyan included Day and Gurewitz with 3 blocks apiece, and sophomore defensive specialist Bridget Haag (Parma/Normandy) with 9 digs.
The Bishop Invitational concludes on Saturday, with Ohio Wesleyan facing Earlham and Grove City.
