Capital 3, Ohio Wesleyan 1

Senior middle hitter Tamra Londot (Utica), sophomore middle hitter Meigan Day (Port Clinton), and senior outside hitter Katie Fain (Vandalia/Butler) turned in double-digit performances in kills to lead Ohio Wesleyan, but Capital took a non-conference win from the Bishops on Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Capital defeated Ohio Wesleyan by scores of 25-19, 25-13, 19-25, 25-20.

The Crusaders took the lead in the first set by breaking a 10-10 tie with an 8-1 run.  Hanna Ewart bookended that run with a pair of kills, both starting and finishing off the Capital scoring spree, and added a third kill and a block assist along the way.  Olivia Arledge and Katie Weilbacher also contributed kills, and Marissa Price had a service ace during the Capital run.  Ohio Wesleyan chipped away at the deficit, closing to within 20-18 with a 4-0 burst that included a pair of kills from freshman outside hitter Rylee Komminsk (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) as well as a kill and a block by Londot.  The Bishops were still within 21-19, but Capital scored the next 4 points to end the set.

Capital raced to an 8-0 lead in the second set, with Kristin Bender chipping in with a solo block and combining with Arledge on 2 other blocks.  The Bishops rallied to within 13-8 with the help of a pair of Day kills and a kill and a block from Londot, but the Crusaders countered with a 6-0 run that featured kills by Arledge and Ewart and went on to finish off the set.

Fain pounded out back-to-back kills to break a 14-14 tie in the third set, starting the Bishops on the way to a win.  Fain added another kill and Londot and freshman outside hitter Mercedez Wood (Alliance/Marlington) combined on a block that helped Ohio Wesleyan open up a 21-17 lead, and Wood later added a kill that gave the Bishops a 23-17 lead.  Kills from Londot and Wood closed out the set and kept the Bishops in the match.

In the fourth set, kills by Day and Fain helped the Bishops tie the score at 17-17, but Capital reeled off kills from Ewart, Weilbacher, and Mona Ratliff to take the lead for good.  Ohio Wesleyan rallied to within 20-19 with the help of kills from Day and Wood, but a Ratliff service ace and a Courtney McCracken kill helped Capital withstand the Bishop rally and seal the set and the match.

Day and Londot recorded 13 kills apiece, while Fain followed with 10.  Freshman setter Shannon Schlater (Englewood/Northmont) dished out 42 assists.

Londot and Schlater each had 4 blocks to lead the Bishop defense, while Day and Wood added 3 blocks each.  Sophomore libero Danielle Birney (Toledo/Sylvania Southview) finished with 13 digs.
