Senior outside hitter Katie Fain (Vandalia/Butler) blasted 11 kills and freshman outside hitter Mercedez Wood (Alliance/Marlington) added 9 more in helping Ohio Wesleyan defeat Manchester at the Manchester University Pizza Hut Volleyball Invitational on Friday in North Manchester, Ind.

The Bishops defeated the Spartans by scores of 25-20, 25-16, 26-24.

Ohio Wesleyan finished strong in winning the first set, closing out the set with a 5-0 run that included a kill by freshman setter Shannon Schlater (Englewood/Northmont) and a game-ending service ace by senior defensive specialist Emily Stewart (East Palestine).

The Bishops opened the second set with a 6-1 burst, with Wood contributing a kill and sophomore libero Danielle Birney (Toledo/Sylvania Southview) zipping a service ace, but the Spartans pared the margin to 8-6 with the help of a pair of kills from Courtney Chowning.  Ohio Wesleyan answered with a 9-0 run that included 4 service aces from sophomore middle hitter Meigan Day (Port Clinton) and a pair of kills by Fain.  Fain added another pair of kills down the stretch as the Bishops took a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set was a back-and-forth affair in which neither team led by more than 3 points until the late going, when Ohio Wesleyan broke a 17-17 tie consecutive kills from Day, Schlater, and Fain on the way to taking a 21-17 lead.  The Bishops were on the doorstep, taking a 24-20 lead, but Sarah Pruden kept the Spartans alive with a kill, then followed with another kill, and Manchester soon had evened the score at 24.  Wood then broke the deadlock with a kill, putting the Bishops at match point, and Schlater and freshman right-side hitter Kelli Venable (Ostrander/Buckeye Valley) combined for a match-ending block.

Schlater finished with a team-high 30 assists, Day and Venable had 2 blocks apiece, and Birney led the Bishops with 15 digs.

Senior middle hitter Tamra Londot (Utica) led the Bishops with 9 kills, while Wood finished with 8.  Schlater collected 24 assists.
