Ohio Wesleyan 80, Wabash 62
Senior wing Dre White (Lima/Bath) and senior post Reuel Rogers (Columbus/Bexley) scored 3 points apiece during an 8-0 run that closed out the first half, and sophomore post Matt Jeske (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) sank a pair of 3-pointers during a 14-3 second-half burst as 22nd-ranked Ohio Wesleyan broke open a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Wabash on Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.
Ohio Wesleyan opened the game with a lay-in by sophomore post Claude Gray (Avon) and a 3-pointer by freshman guard Seth Clark (Lewis Center/Olentangy), but Wabash came back behind the long-range shooting of Russ Sponsler to tie the game at 13, then took a brief lead on a pair of Austin Burton free throws.
The Little Giants were still within a single marker after a Sponsler 3-pointer made it 21-20 with 4:09 left in the first half, but the visitors would not score again during the period.
Meanwhile, Ohio Wesleyan posted a free throw and a lay-in by White, a 3-point play by Rogers, and a Clark jumper from the lane to take a 29-20 lead at the half.
Wabash had pulled to within 35-29 on a Kyle Aiton 3-pointer with 14:28 left in the contest when Rogers kicked off a Bishop run with a pair of free throws and freshman wing Ben Simpson (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) grabbed a defensive rebound and went coast-to-coast. After a Kasey Oetting 3-pointer sliced the Bishop lead to 39-32, a lay-in by senior guard Taylor Rieger (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) and Jeske's first 3-pointer of the run pushed the lead back to 12 points, and Simpson scored on another fast break before Jeske wrapped up the Bishop ouburst with a 3-pointer for a 49-32 Ohio Wesleyan lead with 10:50 to play.
The Little Giants scored the next 5 points of the game to pare the margin to an even dozen, but that was as close as Wabash would come.
White led the Bishops with 20 points, while Clark finished with 15 points and a team-high 3 assists. Rogers and Jeske scored 11 points apiece and shared the team lead with 7 rebounds.
Sponsler led Wabash with 21 points.
