Ohio Wesleyan 83, Denison 75
Senior wing Dre White (Lima/Bath) scored 15 of his 20 points during the second half as 19th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan completed a comeback from a double-digit deficit to defeat Denison in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.
With the score tied at 13, the Big Red got red-hot from the field, hitting 6 of their next 7 shots on the way to a 29-17 lead. Briggs King, Robby Weingart, and John Cheng hit 3-pointers during that stretch, with Cheng tacking on another 3-pointer to end Denison's 16-4 scoring run. The Big Red would lead by as many as 13 points, and still held a 40-30 lead with 3:42 left in the first half.
A lay-in by sophomore post Claude Gray (Avon) and a 3-point play from senior guard Taylor Rieger (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) brought the Bishops within 5, and Ohio Wesleyan would go on a 26-6 scoring spree early in the second half, with Rieger scoring 7 points and White adding 5 during that run. Freshman guard Jon Griggs (Cincinnati/Indian Hill) hit a 3-pointer to close out that run and give Ohio Wesleyan a 62-51 lead with 8:56 to play.
Denison closed to within 62-58 on a Brad Woolard 3-point play with 6:48 remaining, but White scored 9 consecutive Ohio Wesleyan points as the Bishops pushed the lead back into double digits, finishing off the run with a fast-break lay-in that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 75-64 edge with 3:14 left.
Darius White hit a pair of 3-pointers and Alex Longi added a jumper to bring the visitors within 5 during the final minute, but White and freshman guard Seth Clark (Lewis Center/Olentangy) clinched the game at the free throw line.
Gray led the Bishops with 22 points, with 15 of those coming during the first half. White finished with 20 points and a team-high 5 assists, Rieger followed with 16 points, Clark had 11 points, and senior post Reuel Rogers (Columbus/Bexley) scored 11 points, grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds, and blocked 6 Big Red shots.
Longi led Denison with 18 points.
