Senior post Reuel Rogers (Columbus/Bexley) converted a 3-point play that put 17th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay, and the Bishop defense preserved the lead through the final 45 seconds of play to seal a North Coast Athletic Conference win over fifth-ranked Wooster on Wednesday in Wooster.
The Ohio Wesleyan win over Wooster, combined with wins by Wittenberg and DePauw, leaves the 4 teams deadlocked for first place in the NCAC, each with a record of 9-2 in conference play.
The Fighting Scots had taken a 60-56 lead on a 3-pointer by Xavier Brown with 2:46 left in regulation time.
Senior wing Dre White (Lima/Bath) answered with a 3-pointer on Ohio Wesleyan's next possession to bring the Bishops within a single marker, and Rogers converted a 3-point play with :45 remaining to give Ohio Wesleyan a 62-60 advantage.
White blocked a 3-point try by Doug Thorpe at the :30 mark, with sophomore post Claude Gray (Avon) clearing the defensive rebound, but senior guard Taylor Rieger (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) missed the front end of a one-and-one with :21 left to keep the margin at 2 points. Scott Purcell missed on a 3-pointer with 8 ticks left, with Brown gathering the offensive rebound, and Thorpe's 3-pointer just before the horn also was off the mark.
Wooster had built a 10-point first-half lead, breaking a 14-14 tie with a 14-4 run that included 3-pointers by Thorpe and Evan Pannell and a pair of Kenny DeBoer baskets. The hosts would lead by as many as 11 points, that coming on Dan Fanelly's lay-in at the 2:57 mark of the first half that made it a 34-23 game.
The Bishops closed to gap to 7 points at the break, then opened the second half with a basket and a pair of free throws by Rogers to close within 34-31. Ohio Wesleyan came back to even the score at 41 thanks to a 7-0 burst that included a Rogers hoop, a 3-pointer by junior wing Nick Felhaber (Holland/Toledo St. John's) and a pair of free throws from freshman guard Seth Clark (Lewis Center/Olentangy).
The Fighting Scots would again go up by 10, with Thorpe and Brown hitting 3-pointers along the way. Brown's trifecta gave Wooster a 57-47 advantage with 6:20 remaining in regulation time.
White and Rogers took over from there, with White knocking down a 3-pointer and adding a tip-in, then Rogers hitting consecutive jumpers from the lane to bring the Bishops within 57-56 with 3:11 to go, setting up the thrilling conclusion.
Rogers led the Bishops with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Clark finished with 12 points, Gray scored 11 points, and White finished with 10 points.
Thorpe led Wooster with 21 points.
