Sophomore post Claude Gray (Avon) sank a 3-pointer that gave 22nd-ranked Ohio Wesleyan a 6-point lead early in overtime, but ninth-ranked Wittenberg rallied to take a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Wednesday in Springfield.
Senior wing Dre White (Lima/Bath) opened the overtime with a lay-in, then hit the first of 2 free throws for a 57-54 Bishop lead. Gray grabbed the rebound of the missed free throw and buried a 3-pointer for a 60-54 advantage with 4:13 to play.
Wittenberg would score the final 8 points of the game, however, getting a basket and a free throw from Scott Masin and a pair of Zack Leahy free throws to pull within 60-59 with 1:34 to play, and taking a 61-60 lead on Leahy's lay-in with 1:06 remaining.
Ohio Wesleyan misfired on 3 shots on its next possession before Leahy got a defensive rebound and then sank the second of 2 free throws for a 62-60 margin with :21 to play.
White misfired on a potential game-tying lay-in at the :07 mark, but the Bishops got one more chance when the ball went out of bounds off a Tiger defender. Sophomore post Matt Jeske (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) got a look at a 3-pointer for the win, but his shot was off the mark.
Wittenberg had taken an early 5-0 lead on a Cole Bond 3-pointer and a Masin lay-in, but Jeske and freshman guard Seth Clark (Lewis Center/Olentangy) each sank a pair of 3-pointers as Ohio Wesleyan answered with a 19-6 burst to open up a 19-11 lead with 9:42 left in the first half.
The Bishops finished the first half with a 7-0 burst that included lay-ins by senior post Reuel Rogers (Columbus/Bexley) and Gray and a 3-pointer by Clark, and Ohio Wesleyan opened the second half with an 11-0 run highlighted by a pair of Rogers lay-ins, a White lay-in, and a 3-pointer and a lay-in from Clark, the last of which gave the Bishops a 45-23 lead with 16:19 left in regulation time.
Ohio Wesleyan still led, 48-28, on a Gray 3-pointer with 14:22 left, but Wittenberg scored the next 10 points, including 7 straight points by Masin, to pull within 48-38 at the 10:50 mark.
Senior guard Taylor Rieger (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) converted a 3-point play to restore the Bishops' 10-point lead at 52-42 with 7:42 remaining, but another 10-0 Wittenberg run evened the score at 52 with 2:05 left.
