Ohio Wesleyan 4, Oberlin 1

Junior midfielder Brian Schaefer (Chatham, N.J.) set up Ohio Wesleyan's first 2 goals and junior midfielder Lonnie Barnes (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) tallied the game-winner as the 18th-ranked Bishops defeated Oberlin in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Friday at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex.

The Bishops took the lead when Schaefer launched a corner kick into the box and senior back Drew Pang (Dublin/Coffman) headed it home just 85 seconds into the contest.

Oberlin evened the game in the eighth minute.  After a Yeomen corner kick, Nick Wertman had his shot blocked by the Bishop defense, but the rebound went to Adam Chazin-Gray, who scored on the putback at the 7:15 mark.

Matt Bach-Lombardo had a chance to give the Yeomen the lead, but this shot midway through the half was stopped by junior goalkeeper Colin Beemiller (Pickerington/North).

Ohio Wesleyan took the lead shortly thereafter when Schaefer sent the ball to Barnes in the right side of the box, and Barnes shot back to the left side of the Oberlin goal with exactly 20:00 left in the half.

Just over 2 minutes later, the Bishops earned a corner kick, and freshman defender Trey Olsen (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) had his shot saved by Yeomen keeper Connor English.

The Bishops threatened to increase their lead early in the second half, after shots by sophomore forward Kyle Baum (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) and senior forward Taylor Rieger (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange), but English came up with the save on Baum's shot and Rieger's was blocked, resulting in a pair of corner kicks.

Rieger made good on his next opportunity, ripping a shot from 20 yards that found the back of the Oberlin goal in the 58th minute.

The Oberlin defense kept the score at 3-1 in the 60th minute, with English making the save on a shot by Baum.  Senior midfielder Colton Bloecher (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) got to the offensive rebound and fired a shot, but the ball was cleared by an Oberlin defender.

Freshman midfielder David Robinett (Cincinnati/Indian Hill) wrapped up the Ohio Wesleyan scoring with a goal in the 65th minute.

"We played an awful first half," said Bishop head coach Jay Martin.  "We expected a little letdown after Kenyon, but nothing like that.  We had to have a heart-to-heart talk at halftime, and we had to change a couple of things, but they started to play and that's what's important.  Although he didn't score, Colton (Bloecher) played great, Lonnie (Barnes) played great, and in the second half Taylor (Rieger) played great.  In the second half, we had a much better effort."

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Oberlin, 20-6.  Beemiller and sophomore Ben Farynowski (Columbus/Grandview Heights) combined for 2 saves.  English finished with 4 saves for the Yeomen.
