Freshman guard Seth Clark (Lewis Center/Olentangy) sank a 3-pointer that brought 14th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan within 2 points, but Wabash withstood the Bishop comeback and went on to a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Wednesday in Crawfordsville, Ind.
Clark's 3-pointer brought the Bishops within 68-66 with :23 remaining in regulation time.
Forced to foul, the Bishops sent Kyle Aiton to the line with :20 left, and Aiton sank both shots for a 70-66 Wabash lead.
Junior wing Nick Felhaber (Holland/Toledo St. John's) was off the mark on a 3-point attempt with :14 to play, and senior post Reuel Rogers (Columbus/Bexley) and Wabash's Marcus Kammrath tangled up and went to the floor on the rebound, with a personal foul called on Rogers before both players were assessed technical fouls. Ohio Wesleyan received a pair of bench technicals after the play, and 2 more free throws were awarded to Wabash when sophomore post Claude Gray (Avon) left the bench area. Kammrath hit both free throws from the original foul, and Aiton went 5-for-6 on the free throws awarded after the technical fouls.
Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 23-22 lead on a 3-pointer by sophomore post Matt Jeske (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) with 7:29 left in the first half, but Wabash responded with a 9-0 run that included baskets by Gary Ulrich and Pete Nicksic, a 3-pointer from Austin Burton, and an Aiton jumper that made it 31-23 with 4:29 remaining.
The Bishops came back in the second half as Clark hit a basket and a 3-pointer, Rogers collected 3 hoops, and senior guard Taylor Rieger (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) evened the score at 44 with a lay-in with 11:36 left in the contest.
Wabash answered with a 7-0 run that included baskets by Houston Hodges, Kasey Oetting, and Nicksic, and the Little Giants still held a 64-57 lead with 3:54 to go.
Gray responded with a jumper on Ohio Wesleyan's next possession, then buried a 3-pointer to bring the Bishops within 64-62 with 1:29 left. Each team posted 4 points during its next 3 possessions, capped by Clark's 3-pointer with :23 remaining.
Gray led the Bishops with 18 points, Clark finished with 15 points, and Rogers added 10 points and grabbed a team-high 9 rebounds.
Aiton led Wabash with 21 points.
