DePauw 64, Ohio Wesleyan 63
Senior wing Dre White (Lima/Bath) hit a pair of free throws with :08 to play to break a 61-61 tie and give 18th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan the lead, but DePauw's Adam Botts hit a 3-pointer with just over a second to play to give the Tigers a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.
The DePauw win, combined with Wittenberg's win over Hiram, produces a 3-way tie for second place in the NCAC standings. DePauw emerges from the tie as the No. 2 seed in next week's NCAC tournament, while Wittenberg will be the No. 3 seed and Ohio Wesleyan will be the No. 4 seed.
DePauw had pulled to within 60-59 on a Michael Wilkison lay-in with :22 to play, and the Tigers fouled senior guard Taylor Rieger (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) on the inbounds play, with Rieger hitting the second of 2 free throws to give the Bishops a 61-59 advantage.
Botts had his lay-in attempt blocked by senior post Reuel Rogers (Columbus/Bexley) on the Tigers' next possession, but Tommy Fernitz grabbed the rebound and laid it in to even the score with :12 to go.
Fouled on the other end, White sank both free throws to give the Bishops the 63-61 advantage.
Hemmed in on the right side, Botts circled back to the middle of the court and got off a shot from the top of the key to put the Tigers ahead, and the Bishops were not able to get off a shot in what time remained.
Ohio Wesleyan had expanded its lead with a 9-0 run late in the first half, turning a 24-20 advantage into a 33-20 cushion with the help of a White lay-in, a Rogers 3-pointer, a pair of free throws from freshman guard Seth Clark (Lewis Center/Olentangy), and a Rogers jumper from the lane.
DePauw opened the second half with a 13-6 run to pull within 45-42 with 11:16 to go, and the Tigers were still within 50-47 when baskets by Rogers, White, and Rogers again gave the Bishops a 56-50 lead with 3:11 to play.
A Michael Onuorah lay-in and a Botts jumper made it a 2-point game, and after Rogers hit a jumper from the lane at the 1:17 mark, Pat Haggin's 3-pointer brought the Tigers within 58-57 with :58 left. Rieger drove for a lay-in to restore the Bishops' 3-point lead, but Wilkison's lay-in made it 60-59 and set up the final 22 seconds of action.
Rogers led the Bishops with 22 points and 10 rebounds. White finished with 17 points, and Rieger scored 13 points and added a team-high 3 assists.
Haggin led DePauw with 20 points.
