Jerry Cornell, former assistant football coach at Ohio Wesleyan, died on Sunday. He was 92.
Cornell was an assistant coach for the Battling Bishops from 1981-94, serving under Jack Fouts, Steve Farasovsky, and Mike Hollway. He was part of one of the most successful stretches in Ohio Wesleyan football history, a 4-year stretch from 1989-92 during which the Bishops compiled a record of 33-6-1, a winning percentage of .838. Cornell also served as an assistant coach with the Bishop track & field teams, coaching the throwing events.
Prior to coming to Ohio Wesleyan, Cornell was head coach at Delaware Hayes High School for 18 seasons, compiling a record of 143-121-8. His Pacer teams won an Ohio Capital Conference championship in 1969 and finished as OCC runner-up in 1974. Before coaching at Hayes, Cornell was head coach for 10 seasons at Delaware Willis, Johnstown Monroe, and Van (W.Va.) High Schools.
A native of Spencer, W.Va., Cornell graduated from West Virginia Tech in 1950.
