Senior midfielder Colton Bloecher (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) scored the game-winning goal in the first overtime period to give 16th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan a non-conference win over Hanover on Wednesday at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex.

The Panthers had taken a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute when Taylor Childers crossed the ball from the right side of the field into the left side of the penalty area to Will Bridgeman, who shot back across to the right side of the Bishop goal.

Ohio Wesleyan would enjoy the edge in possession for much of the remainder of the half, but the Bishops could not translate that into the tying goal.  Bloecher had his header off a corner kick saved by Hanover keeper John Seewer midway through the half.  In the 40th minute after a restart, Bloecher sent the ball into the box, where junior forward Evan Lee (Toledo/St. Johns) had his shot batted away by Seewer.  The rebound went to freshman midfielder David Robinett (Cincinnati/Indian Hill) near the left post, but his header was cleared off the line by a Panther defender.

The second half saw the Bishops assemble even more scoring chances.  Shots by junior back Matt DiCesare (Westerville/St. Francis DeSales) and junior forward Matt Cohen (Cincinnati/Seven Hills) were tracked down by Seewer in the early going, Bloecher and Lee ran a give and go midway through the period with Bloecher slicing his shot over the crossbar, and junior midfielder Brian Schaefer (Chatham, N.J.) beat a pair of defenders and uncorked a rocket from the right side that Seewer stopped with 5:56 left in regulation time.

Lee and Schaefer had looks in the 86th and 87th minutes respectively, with Seewer saving both.

After a Bishop corner kick, sophomore midfielder Nick Norman (Cincinnati/Oak Hills) kept the ball in play along the left end line, then centered to senior back Drew Pang (Dublin/Coffman) at the top of the box, and Pang whistled a shot into the back of the Hanover goal to even the game with 2:53 remaining in regulation time.

The only shot of the overtime period was the game-winner.  Junior midfielder Lonnie Barnes (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) sent the ball ahead to Bloecher, whose 20-yard shot ended the contest with 5:27 left in the first overtime period.

"This was one of those games that was a double-edged sword," said Bishop head coach Jay Martin.  "I was disappointed in how we came out. We weren't ready to play at all.  We gave up a terrible goal -- he hit a great shot, but our defense was not good.  You have to be pleased with how we came back.  We saw two great individual efforts from two seniors, and that's what seniors are supposed to do."

The win was Martin's 646th as the Battling Bishop men's soccer coach, breaking the Ohio Wesleyan record for coaching victories in a single sport.  Roger Ingles compiled 645 wins as baseball coach from 1984-2005.

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Hanover, 22-6.  Senior goalkeeper Colin Beemiller (Pickerington/North) went the distance in the Ohio Wesleyan goal.  Seewer finished with 8 saves for Hanover.
