Senior forward Taylor Rieger (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) and senior back Mason Hoge (Mason) scored goals as 22nd-ranked Ohio Wesleyan defeated Mary Washington in the first round of the annual Fred Myers/adidas Invitational on Friday at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex.

In Friday's opener, Case Reserve had Joshua Prosser and Michael Balog each contribute a goal and an assist to highlight a 4-0 win over Guilford.

Scoring chances were scarce during the first half.  Ohio Wesleyan had the first look, with junior midfielder Brian Schaefer (Chatham, N.J.) testing Mary Washington keeper Tyler Back in the 13th minute, and UMW's Riley Fisher putting a shot on goal in the 17th minute, only to see senior Colin Beemiller (Pickerington/North) there for the save.

Senior midfielder Colton Bloecher (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) launched a shot midway through the half that Back tipped over the crossbar.

In the 31st minute, Ohio Wesleyan earned a corner kick, and the ball was headed out of the penalty box.  Rieger was there to control the ball just outside the box, and he uncorked a shot through traffic and just inside the left post to give the Bishops a 1-0 lead.

Bloecher nearly made it 2-0 with a similar shot through traffic just over a minute into the second half, but Back made the stop.

The Eagles threatened with long shots by Connor Phillips in the 52nd minute and by Torre Swope in the 62nd minute, but Beemiller fielded both shots to preserve the lead.

Hoge added to the Bishop lead in the 68th minute.  After a restart, the ball was sent out of the penalty area to Hoge, who set a shot into the upper right corner of the goal.

"We didn't play well," said Bishop head coach Jay Martin.  "There's something missing, I don't know if it's a killer instinct or what, but we're missing something.  That was a great goal by Mason (Hoge) and a good goal by Taylor (Rieger).  I thought Taylor (Rieger) played well, Lonnie (Barnes) played well, and Colton (Bloecher) did great, but some of the others are struggling."

Each team recorded 13 shots.  Beemiller finished with 3 saves while recording the shutout for Ohio Wesleyan, while Back made 4 saves for the Eagles.

Friday's opener saw Case Reserve take the lead in the ninth minute.  The Spartans had earned a corner kick, and Prosser sent the ball into the box.  Chris Cvecko headed the ball across to Balog on the left side, and Balog finished the chance to put CWRU ahead to stay.

Midway through the first half, Balog centered the ball from the left end line to Matthew Zembas, who found the back of the net to make it 2-0.  CWRU added second-half goals by Prosser and Slater Jameson just over 2 minutes apart to account for the 4-0 final.

Thomas Nolan and Calvin Boyle combined on the shutout for CWRU.  Marko Mandalinic had 3 saves for the Quakers.
