Junior forward Evan Lee (Toledo/St. Johns) and senior forward Taylor Rieger (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) provided the scoring to give 22nd-ranked Ohio Wesleyan a win over Guilford in the second round of the annual Fred Myers/adidas® Invitational on Saturday at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex.

In Saturday's opener, Case Reserve got goals from Taylor Fletcher and Michael Balog in a 2-0 win over Mary Washington.

Ohio Wesleyan had the first scoring chance of the game when Lee took a through ball from junior midfielder Lonnie Barnes (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) and broke in on the Quaker goal, but had his shot go across the goal mouth in the third minute.

The Quakers countered just over 5 minutes into the action when Jonny Goffredi came up with the ball and got off a 25-yard shot, but senior Colin Beemiller (Pickerington/North) made a diving save to keep the game scoreless.

Lee put the Bishops on the scoreboard late in the half, taking a crossing pass from senior midfielder Colton Bloecher (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) and finishing the chance with 2:22 remaining before halftime.

The Bishops pressured early in the second half, getting shots from Lee and junior forward Matt Cohen (Cincinnati/Seven Hills) during the opening minutes, but Guilford goalie Marko Mandalinic was there to save each one.

Controversy entered the contest in the 62nd minute when Bloecher was called for a foul against Mandalinic and was assessed a red card.

Ohio Wesleyan responded with a goal shortly thereafter, with sophomore back Phoenix Neitzelt (Delaware/Hayes) sending a through ball to Rieger, who ripped a shot into back of the Quaker net.

The Bishops came close to a third goal when junior midfielder Brian Schaefer (Chatham, N.J.) sent a curving shot toward the left post, but Mandalinic made the save in the 82nd minute.

"In light of all the circumstances, it was a good result," said Ohio Wesleyan head coach Jay Martin.  "It was really good for us to go down and score a goal after Colton (was carded).  We played well defensively again.  There are still some things to work out on the attacking end, but that will work out."

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Guilford, 19-14.  Beemiller finished with 3 saves while recording the shutout for Ohio Wesleyan, while Mandalinic stopped 8 shots for the Quakers.

Saturday's opener saw Case Reserve and Mary Washington battle through a scoreless first half.  The Spartans took the lead in the 52nd minute after a corner kick, when Fletcher jumped on a loose ball in the box and found the back of the net.

Balog increased the lead to 2-0 midway through the period when he evaded an Eagle defender and scored from inside the penalty area.

Calvin Boyle had 1 save in posting the shutout for CWRU.  Tyler Back made 3 saves for the Eagles.

Barnes and Rieger joined senior back Mason Hoge (Mason) and senior back Drew Pang (Dublin/Coffman) on the all-tournament team, as did Guilford's Jake Elsey and Christian Torres, Mary Washington's Carlos Mendoza and Elvin Arbaiza, and Case Reserve's Chris Cvecko, Bairdy Hansen, Ryan Meyer, and Balog.  The Dick Gauthier Award honoring the tournament's Most Valuable Player went to Meyer of Case Western Reserve.

The Fred Myers/adidas® Invitational, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Delaware County, has been one of the featured events on the Battling Bishops' schedule for 37 seasons. It honors Fred Myers, longtime soccer and lacrosse coach at Ohio Wesleyan. Ohio Wesleyan has won the tournament championship 28 times during the 37 years that the Myers Invitational has been held.
